Dr. Runge explains how intern and externships are not just about learning the science/medicine, but also understanding OR etiquette and having good bedside manner with clients.
So what’s the difference between an intern and an extern?
• Interns are graduated doctors who are choosing to further their education through hands on, PAID training from experienced doctors. It typically gives them the opportunity to choose a specialty, which in our hospital means they get to learn a little bit of everything over their full year with us. The big thing to note is that these are actual doctors despite what most people confuse simply because of the term “intern.” If they choose not to do an internship after graduating, they are full eligible to work in any facility. Internships give them the best opportunity to become better doctors and take their careers a step further.
• Externs are 4th year veterinary students who get the opportunity to work as shadows in an eligible hospital, which means that they don’t play a hands on role in any diagnosing, surgery, or treatments. They are simply here to learn and complete the necessary rotations leading up to their graduation.
