Did you know that “Pitbull” or “Pitbull mix” is often commonly more than the American Pit Bull Terrier? No wonder they have such a mistaken reputation! Us hoomans generalize the breed automatically when we see them. Although this includes a couple of very popular mixes, it’s interesting to look at all the breeds mistaken as “Pitbulls” by the world, or contribute to mixes commonly mistaken as “Pitbulls”.

I don’t know about you guys, but if I’m going to mistakenly label one of these guys, I’m going to stick to House Hippo. 😜

🥳 MONDAY MOTIVATION 🥳

We recently came up on a pup’s adopt-a-versary!! Miss Riley (formerly Layla) has been with her family now for one year!! Woohoo!!

Riley was found on the streets of Stockton, on a dirty cushion and blanket, with a smaller dog companion. The scene was heartbreaking, and it is unknown how long her life was like this. Upon being saved, a rescue came for her small companion, leaving her alone again.

Formerly as Layla, she was found by us at House Hippo Rescue! We had an amazing opportunity to watch this girl flourish in her foster home. She actually befriended our very first House Hippo Rescue’s save, Franny!! (She is the grey dog pictured with ~now~ Riley)

She now lives up by Lake Tahoe, and gets to enjoy the lake all the time!! She is also really enjoying snow, during the cold weather months. She loves her humans!

Please show Miss Riley some love and celebrations!

And Mother's Day surprise number 2!!! 🤍

Hilo — now Max D — is officially living the life every rescue dog deserves.

From being born after his mama, Mama Anahi, narrowly escaped euthanasia with hours left to live… to now running free on 8 beautiful acres with an incredible family of his own. It’s hard to even put into words how happy this makes us.

This sweet farm boy now has human brothers to grow up with, amazing fur sisters to show him the ropes, endless space to run and play, and a life filled with love, adventure, safety, and belonging.Some stories just feel meant to be from the very beginning. ❤️

This sweet farm boy now has human brothers to grow up with, an amazing fur sister to show him the ropes, endless space to run and play, and a life filled with love, adventure, safety, and belonging.
And if you know Hilo, you know he is going to be the BEST big brother. He has always had the sweetest soul and the biggest heart.

What makes this story even more special is that he won’t be too far from his siblings, Luna (formerly Kona) and Molokai.
We are already looking forward to future sibling playdates and watching these babies continue to grow up loved, safe, and connected. 🖤

And we could never thank Deeana enough for stepping in when Yoshi left the country for a bit and opening her home to both Hilo and Molokai as fosters.

From the very beginning, we had a feeling there might be a foster fail somewhere in the mix… because honestly, how could there not be with these puppies?

It takes truly special people to step into rescue and open their hearts the way Yoshi and Deeana did for this family. Watching these puppies end up in homes filled with so much love has been one of the greatest gifts.
We are forever grateful for the people rescue has brought into our lives and for every single person who chose to love one of Mama Anahi’s babies like family.

Enjoy your best life, sweet Max D. You were always meant for this. 🤍

We've got the PERFECT Mother's Day surprise for you all!

There are some people who come into rescue and leave a mark on your heart forever.
Yoshi is one of those people. ❤️

When Mama Anahi sat in the shelter sick, scared, and with hours left before euthanasia, nobody truly knew what was happening to her. It was only suspected that she might be pregnant. Her future was uncertain, and her life was about to end before it ever really had a chance to begin.

And then Yoshi stepped in.

Without hesitation, she offered to foster Mama Anahi and immediately took her straight from the shelter to the vet. That was the moment we discovered the truth, Anahi wasn’t just fighting for herself.

She was carrying four babies she was fighting for.

We thought we had around three weeks before they would arrive, time to prepare and settle in… but just about a week later, Mama Anahi gave birth.

And through every single moment, Yoshi showed up with love, patience, compassion, and unwavering dedication. She became Mama Anahi’s safe place during one of the most vulnerable times of her life. She loved those babies as if they were her own from the very first breath they took.
Sleepless nights, worry, excitement, crying, chaos, milestones — she embraced all of it wholeheartedly.

And now, one of those babies, Molokai, gets to stay exactly where he belongs. 🖤

Some foster stories end with goodbye. But sometimes, the universe makes it very clear that a dog was already home all along. Watching the bond between Yoshi and Molokai grow has been something so incredibly special to witness. There is so much love there, so much trust, and so much comfort between them. Between her and the entire family.

Yoshi, thank you for saving Mama Anahi and her babies. Thank you for stepping in when their lives depended on it.

They would all be dead without you.

Thank you for being the kind of human rescue dogs desperately need in this world.
And thank you for becoming family, not just to Molokai, but to us too.
I am so unbelievably grateful our paths crossed, and I truly look forward to having you in my life for a very long time.

The best foster fails are the ones that were always meant to be, and man was this one emotional 🤍

HANK (formerly Blazer) — THE COMEBACK STORY WE’LL NEVER FORGET ❤️‍🔥🐾

He was euthanasia listed.
He had been attacked.
He was so terrified he had to be carried out of the shelter… completely shut down, broken, and unsure if the world was ever going to be safe again.

And now?
He’s Hank.

A loved, safe, happy boy with a family who saw him—not for where he was, but for who he could become.
His incredible parents Beulah Velveteen DeVille took a chance on a dog most people would have walked past. A scared, shut-down pittie with a past full of fear… and they gave him patience, structure, and love. Now he has a dog sibling, a home, and a life that once felt impossible. Watching him come out of his shell and become the dog he was always meant to be? There are no words.

But Hank’s story didn’t start there…

His foster Joanne Ruffino-Taylor was his first safe place.
We knew almost nothing about him—only that he had been attacked and was terrified of everything. And she still said yes.
She gave him time. Space. Grace.
She showed him that humans can be kind. That safety is real.
And her incredible girl, Pixie, showed him how to be a dog again.
It wasn’t easy. Not even close.
There were hard days. Emotional days. Days most would have quit.
She never did.
She rode every wave with him. She stayed when it was hard. She believed in him before anyone else could.
Because of her… he lived.

And because of adopters like Hank’s family… dogs like him don’t just survive—
they thrive.
We love you Hank and are excited to watch you live your best life.

✨ This is what giving a chance and adopting looks like.
✨ This is how lives are saved.

✨ The Last Little One Waiting… ✨
Molokai

All his siblings have found their homes.
The toys are quieter now. The cuddle pile is smaller.
And somehow… he’s still here.

At just 14 weeks old, this sweet boy is everything you could ever want in a best friend.
He’s gentle, loving, playful, and has that special kind of soul that just feels different the moment you meet him. The kind of puppy who looks at you like you’re his whole world… because you will be. 🤍

He’s been watching his brothers and sisters get adopted one by one, and while he still plays, still loves, still wags his tail nonstop… you can’t help but feel like he’s waiting for his turn.

And we just know his person is out there.

He’s ready for a home filled with love, laughter, and all the little moments that make life better — morning cuddles, silly zoomies, and falling asleep right next to you at the end of the day.

He's someone's everything and we sure hope that person swoops him up soon 🤍
