Well summer got away from me this year. The dome was the collection for all garden thugs as needed.

I spent last weekend cleaning it out. I even moved everything and vacuumed all the spider webs.

I then reorganized everything, winterized the oya pots, and brought in the electric fence.

I have a couple heat mats ready to go at a moments notice and the center is ready for all the citrus trees to move in for the winter.

Sometimes deep cleaning after a traumatic experience is great therapy and I have been doing a lot of that lately.

Happy October!

A little late but better than never. Here is a list of things this October you can get planted for the next growing season.

While you are getting ready to plant it's time to take advantage of these sunny cooler days and start the yard clean up.
Get those weeds pulled and old yard debris from the garden out.

Better late than never!

Normally I fertilize my citrus trees on the equinoxes but LIFE got in the way this year.

Every tree got a good dose for Fall growth and will get one more good rain before moving them to a covered area. Soaking up as much of the fall and winter sun as possible without being drowned from all our rain.

The trees will live on my covered porch for the winter unless we get some good freezing temperatures but light and cool temps are very good for citrus even in the fall and winter. My porch is south facing so they will get plenty of natural light without becoming water logged.

Onions we planted back on May 7th and are starting to flop their necks to start the curing process on July 29.

Onions planted early allow lots of green growth leading up to the summer solstice. The larger the greens grow the larger your onion bulbs will be.

After the summer solstice the growth shifted into the bulbing process due to the decrease in day length. They will continue to bulb up through the summer days and eventually start "breaking" their necks.

This is why in the PNW you want long day season onions. We do fine with day neutral as well but we get the big onions that are bred for these long summer days.

SIDE NOTE: Just because the necks have follen don't pull them out yet! If the roots are still strongly secured in the soil the onions will put on a little bit more growth. Wait for the onions to start to naturally cure from the heat of the sun before you harvest and cure for the winter.

Stay tuned for harvest and curing!!
