What happens when a board-certified surgeon steps out of the operating room? 🔪➡️🐟

On this episode of Ask Dr. Gaynor, I asked my friend Stevemehler,DVM, DACVS, DVM, DACVS, how a surgeon ends up in the nutraceutical world, which seems about as "anti-surgical" as it gets. His colleagues and residents have had plenty of jokes about it over the years! 😄

His answer will sound familiar to every vet and every pet parent: so much of what we see is chronic disease, above all osteoarthritis. It's misunderstood, it's frustrating, and it takes our patients away from the things they love. That drive to find better options led Steve to omega-3 research.

Stem cells aren’t a one-size-fits-all drug. They respond to what’s actually going on in the joint.

In this clip, Dr. Bob Harman, founder and CEO of VetStem, joins Dr. James Gaynor to explain what happens when stem cells are injected into an inflamed joint. The cells read their surroundings and make the right anti-inflammatory compounds for that specific joint. That helps turn down the signals behind the pain. Once a dog feels better and starts moving again, the movement helps the joint more.

In the newest Ask Dr. Gaynor conversation, I sat down with Dr. Steve Mehler to dig into what the research actually says about EPA and DHA for dogs with arthritis: what they do in the joint, why the dose and the source matter more than the label, and where fish oil fits inside a bigger pain-management plan rather than replacing one.
