Behind every exam, lab sample, X-ray, and recovery cuddle is a team making it happen.

This Veterinary Technician Week, we’re celebrating our veterinary assistants—Mahagony, Darby, and Hannah (and our client services representative, Angel!)!

From caring for nervous pets to keeping families informed, each brings something valuable to our team. These photos offer a little peek at the people behind your pet’s care, and some of the sweet faces that make the work worthwhile.

Please join us in thanking our team! Have a kind memory or a shout-out for someone? Leave it in the comments—we’d love to share it with them. 💬

🦷🐾 Little Bits, Big Dental Discoveries!

Meet Little Bits, pictured here with her nurse, Mahagony! Little Bits belongs to Mahagony's mom, which also makes him Mahagony's furry little brother, right? 😂

Little Bits recently visited us for a dental examination and cleaning under anesthesia. As it turns out, this little guy was hiding a few uncomfortable secrets beneath his gumline!

During his initial awake exam, we noticed heavier tartar buildup on the right side of his mouth than the left, a clue that he might have been favoring one side when chewing.

Once he was anesthetized, dental X-rays revealed the reason: periodontal disease and a hidden tooth-root fracture! Ouch!

These painful problems aren't always visible just by looking in a pet's mouth, which is why X-rays are such an important part of thorough dental care.

The happy ending? Little Bits went home with fewer teeth but a much more comfortable mouth, and Mahagony got to give her little "brother" some extra TLC. ❤️

The takeaway: Dogs are remarkably good at hiding dental pain. Even subtle changes in chewing habits or uneven tartar buildup can tell us something important!

A weekend of learning... with a few feathered and long-eared guest stars! 🦉🐴

Mahagony attended the MU VetTech Conference at Mizzou’s College of Veterinary Medicine this weekend, sharpening her knowledge of:
🔬 What’s happening under the microscope
🐶 Health concerns in flat-faced breeds
🧴 Topical treatments for pets
🫁 Supporting patients in respiratory distress
💤 Using multiple approaches to anesthesia

Between lectures, she also got to see the raptors from Raptor Rehab and the vet school’s mule team. We’d say that’s a pretty great class lineup!

We appreciate Mahagony spending her weekend learning skills she can bring back to our patients—and sharing the animal photos with the rest of us! 💛

🐾 Charlie & Luna: Big Fluff, Bigger Adventures!

These two magnificent fluffballs are Charlie, a Colorado Mountain Dog, and Luna, a Great Pyrenees. Between them, there's enough fur to make a whole third dog!

Charlie belongs to a fascinating new breed! The Colorado Mountain Dog has been in development since around 2008, combining livestock guardian breeds like the Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd. The goal? A dependable guardian that can discourage predators while remaining calm, affectionate, and welcoming to children and visitors, with a little less barking and wandering than some traditional guardian breeds.

Luna, meanwhile, is a classic Great Pyrenees with her own sense of adventure—and fashion. She's been known to arrive at the clinic sporting a rather impressive pink makeover, courtesy of the berries she enjoys rolling around in. Who needs a groomer when nature provides free highlights?

We love seeing these two gentle giants and hearing about their latest adventures!

Does anyone else have a dog who considers staying clean completely optional? 😆

Canine Distemper Is Circulating in Missouri Wildlife. Is Your Dog Protected?

The October issue of Missouri Conservationist highlights an important disease affecting wildlife across our state. In 2025, the MDC reported 135 wildlife samples testing positive for canine distemper virus (CDV).

Why should dog owners care?

Canine distemper is a highly contagious, potentially fatal viral disease that affects dogs and several wildlife species, including raccoons, foxes, coyotes, and skunks.

The good news? Canine distemper is preventable through vaccination! The distemper vaccine is included in your dog's routine DA2PP ("distemper/parvo") vaccination. Keeping this vaccine current is one of the most effective ways to protect your dog.

You can also help by keeping pets away from sick wildlife and reporting animals behaving abnormally to the Missouri Department of Conservation.

Not sure if your dog's distemper vaccine is up to date? We're happy to help you check!

The Diagnosis? Excessive Cuteness! 🐾

Meet Yoru, the tiny kitten who recently brought his big personality into our kitty exam room! 🖤 He was here for a medical checkup, but he clearly missed the memo about "being sick."

Yoru decided that the best way to handle a vet visit was to treat the exam room and Darby like a jungle gym! He declared Darby's shoulders to be the best seat in the house.

🎃 Halloween can be spooky for dogs, too!

Doorbells, unfamiliar costumes, and noisy visitors can make an ordinary evening feel overwhelming. Start planning now to help your dog feel safe:

🐾 Set up a quiet retreat with their bed, water, and favorite toys, away from the front door.
🐾 Keep them indoors during trick-or-treating, and check that their ID tags are current.
🐾 Offer a dog-safe chew or puzzle toy during the busiest hours. Keep candy and chocolate out of reach!
🐾 If you dress them up, practice beforehand, supervise, and make sure the costume allows comfortable movement, vision, and breathing.

If your dog struggles with visitors or noises, let us know before Halloween so we can discuss ways to help. 🧡

Say hello to our newest pack member, Sister!

This gorgeous 1-year-old bundle of joy strutted into the clinic for her new patient exam and officially upgraded everyone’s day. To no one's surprise, she was incredibly friendly, well-mannered, and basically standard-issue perfection!

Her screening labs came back looking fantastic (because she's a straight-A student, obviously). We also spent some time chatting about keeping her safe with the right parasite protection and getting her scheduled for a spay procedure.

Sister, you are an absolute angel! Welcome to the clinic family! ❤️

It’s been a heartwarming week at the clinic welcoming three senior superstars back for their 9th study visits! 🐾

Reilly, Cash, and Beau are taking part in Loyal's STAY study, a nationwide trial for a new medication ("LOY-002") aiming to help senior dogs live longer, healthier lives. Because it's a double-blind study, we don't know who is getting the medication or the placebo, but these boys are living their best lives:

Reilly (Lab/hound mix): He’s aging like Benjamin Button since joining the trial 2 1/2 years ago! He brings pure, youthful joy every time he visits.

Cash (Standard Poodle): The ultimate gentleman of a patient. His flawless manners melt our hearts every time.

Beau (Goldendoodle): A handsome man who loves soaking up all the extra attention from our team.

We are so proud of these pups and grateful to their amazing families for helping advance the future of senior wellness. Drop some love for our senior stars in the comments! 👇❤️

Two dog supplements recalled for possible Salmonella

FDA posted a September 8 recall affecting products sold through Amazon, Chewy, and Fi:

Fi Calming Supplement for Dogs, 180 g — lot 26118
Fi 8-in-1 Formula for Dogs, 180 g — lot 26159

The concern extends beyond canine digestive disease, as apparently unaffected dogs may shed Salmonella and expose human family members. Clients should stop using affected lots, seal and discard them, clean exposed surfaces, and seek veterinary or medical advice if illness develops.
