When you have elevated odor in HRD or trailing work, the scent cone behaves very differently than ground-level odor. Here’s the practical breakdown handlers need to understand:

🐾 Elevated Odor Scent Cone

🔺 What Happens?

When odor source is elevated:
• Tree stand
• Vehicle
• Cliff edge
• Structure
• Elevated remains
• Human above ground level

…the scent cone often:
• Starts higher in the air
• Travels farther before dropping
• Can create a false source area downwind

🌬️ How the Cone Behaves

Ground-Level Odor

Usually:
• Pools low
• Spreads outward
• Easier for dog to source directly

Elevated Odor

Usually:
• Travels on air currents longer
• Drops where terrain/thermals force it down
• May create strongest odor AWAY from source

👉 Dogs may:
• Alert below source
• Circle repeatedly
• Work upward
• Overshoot source area
