Huckleberry's Snack Shack

Huckleberry's Snack Shack I wanted to honor my perfect pit bull, Huckleberry, in the best way.

Huckleberry’s Snack Shack will temporarily feed local pets, allowing families to increase their ability to care for pets with the goal of keeping them out of shelters and with their families. He was an ambassador for the breed, exploding with an abundance of love, full of contagious playful energy that lived each moment fully.

We’ve been meaning to share our numbers from May, June & July… and, well, calculating those numbers got away from us. 😂

But we finally sat down, crunched the numbers, and WOW.

Here’s a look at what YOU helped make happen over the last three months. 👇

Thank you for continuing to support Huckleberry’s Snack Shack.

We did that. 💚

WOWZER. What a day.

There is some serious power in collaboration. Today, Huckleberry's Snack Shack, Rescue Pack and Silverstray Social came together with one goal and served nearly 500 NWI residents.

And when I say we had a LOT of stuff… I mean it. 😂

Between our three organizations, we brought 12,000 POUNDS of pet food, people food, toys and books for the kids, bottled water, and the most random assortment of Amazon donations you could imagine. Cleaning supplies, K-cups, assorted beverages, individually packaged snacks, nails, bird feeders… a little bit of everything.

Every car that came through received pet food for their dogs and/or cats, a reusable snack bag filled with goodies, and several miscellaneous items from our Amazon donations. And about 50 people went home with a mouth-watering BBQ pulled pork sandwich.

All three organizations are incredibly fortunate to have the support behind the work we do, but even more so, the loyal volunteers who show up when it’s time to actually do it. There are a gazillion moving parts when it comes to planning and preparing for something this big. It takes a village to get it from an idea in your head to hundreds of cars driving through and it would never happen without the people who support us and show up.

I feel confident speaking for all three organizations when I say it feels really damn good to be able to lean on each other. To bring what each of us does best to the table, work together, and make something bigger happen for people who needed a little help today.

A hill I will die on:

We all share one goal.

We may take different roads to get there, but that doesn’t make one road better than the other. We all have different ideas, approaches, and ways of serving our communities and there is enough need out there for all of us.

Find your people. Do good work. Help where you can. And when you find people who want to work alongside you instead of against you, hold onto them.

I absolutely love our friends at Rescue Pack. And today, I made a whole bunch of new friends through Silverstray Social.

Thank you to everyone who donated, volunteered, packed, loaded, delivered, shared our posts, or helped make today happen in any way. The Gary Dream Team (Kathy, Mike, Michelle, Kelly and Jamie) wholeheartedly appreciates you. 💚

Erin is a little more country than I am and that accent definitely gives her away. 😂 And I’m… let’s just say comfortable in just about any neighborhood. We’re different in a lot of ways, but we share the same values, the same passion for helping people and animals, and somehow we work really damn well together.

We’re loaded up and headed to Gary!

Send us some good travel juju, good vibes, and all the right energy for today. We’re hoping for a smooth trip, good weather, happy families and pets, good people, new connections, and whatever else the day has in store for us.

We’ve been getting A LOT done over here.

Yesterday, Hillary and Sherri came over to help me pack snack bags, and we knocked out 150 bags filled with some of the best snacks.

Dad came over today to help me organize and contain everything for tomorrow. After dinner, I packed another 48 bagged lunches with pulled pork sandwiches.

Tomorrow, it’s Erin and me from the Huckleberry’s Snack Shack crew heading to Gary. She’s bringing her truck so we can haul the toys, snack bags, lunches, and all the fuel for our volunteers; water, Gatorade, pop, cookies, donuts, jerky, sandwiches… basically enough food to keep everyone going. 😂

There’s something about the night before an outreach that I really love. The house is full of bags and boxes, my kitchen is a mess, and there are piles of stuff all over the garage that somehow need to make it into Erin’s truck tomorrow morning. It’s a lot of work, but it’s the kind of work I’m really grateful to get to do.

I really do have the best people around me. People who show up, roll up their sleeves, and help get s**t done. And taking care of people has always been what I do best. Give me a community that needs a little extra help, and I’m going to figure out how we can show up for them.

I love doing anything with Rescue Pack. They are my kind of people. And I’m really excited to finally meet the people behind Silverstray Social and work alongside them.

I’ve had the opportunity to help communities all over Chicago and the suburbs, the West Side, South Side, East Side, and everywhere in between. Something tells me the residents of Gary are going to become some of my favorites.

Tomorrow is going to be a good day.

Patty at The Home Depot always makes sure we’re taken care of before our community outreach events.

This time, she helped us with 100 bottles of dish soap to distribute tomorrow during our NWI storm relief event in Gary.

We’re so grateful for businesses and people like Patty who continue to show up for our community.
