Our team traveled ✈️ to Charlotte, North Carolina, this week for the ACVS Surgery Summit, a national veterinary surgery conference, to network with surgeons around the world!

How is a board-certified surgeon different from a regular veterinarian? 🧐

AFTER completing 4 years of veterinary school 🏫, a veterinary surgeon continues on to complete a one year rotating internship, then a one year surgical internship and after that 3 years of surgical residency (where they spend those years focused only on learning advanced surgical skills). After completing the residency they must pass a very difficult test 📝 to be able to say they are “board-certified!” When it comes to surgery, they are the best of the best! 🤩

VMC currently has 2 boarded surgeons on staff. We are looking to add an additional board-certified surgeon to our team! 👩‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

❤️ Dr. Alix Saavedra, our board-certified cardiologist, is accepting appointments Tuesday–Friday from 8a to 5p.

🩻 Dr. Wilson, our board-certified radiologist, is available for abdominal ultrasound appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8a to 5p, and emergent ultrasound appointments are available through our ER department almost every day of the week.

…and here comes Gus, one of our bilingual emergency veterinary technicians, ready to step in and help clients communicate with our team when needed. ❤️ Gus also runs our hyperbaric chamber! We’re so glad he’s part of VMC.

At VMC, our board-certified radiologist, Dr. Nedra Wilson, uses ultrasound to look beyond what we can see on a physical exam. Ultrasound is one of the diagnostic tools we use to help find answers when pets aren’t feeling their best.

If your pet needs an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan, we are here to help every day of the week! 💙🐾

🐾 What do you do if your pet swallows something they shouldn’t have? Timing matters! ⏰

Here’s a behind the scenes look at Dr. Fincher, one of our emergency clinicians, performing endoscopy on a Doberman. Endoscopy uses a flexible camera and specialized instruments to retrieve swallowed objects from the stomach.

The camera goes down the mouth, through the esophagus and into the stomach. Once in the stomach, special instruments can grab the object and pull it back up through the mouth. All pets are briefly under anesthesia for the procedure and wake up pain free!

If your pet swallows something they shouldn’t have, it is extremely important to have them evaluated quickly. As long as the object is still in the stomach, endoscopy can help avoid surgery. Once the object moves into the intestines, it may be beyond the scope’s reach, and surgery may be needed.

If you suspect your pet swallowed something, don’t wait for symptoms…call us right away.

What is a Veterinary Criticalist? 🩺🐾

A Veterinary Criticalist is a veterinarian who completes an additional 4–5 years of advanced training after veterinary school. They specialize in treating critically ill and injured animals…from severe infections and breathing difficulties to trauma and complex emergencies.

A Criticalist provides intensive care when patients need it most❤️. Dr. Diaz (pictured) and Dr. Redavid are Criticalists at VMC.

VMC is always looking for ways to stay at the forefront of new technologies, treatments, and advances in veterinary medicine. Continuing education is an important part of that commitment!

Our team is constantly learning from one another on a daily basis through case discussions and rounds. In addition we offer continuing education opportunities led by our doctors and lead technicians on staff. Most recently, Dr. Redavid developed and presented a RACE®-approved continuing education course on oxygen therapy.

We are proud to have team members who share their knowledge and help all of us continue learning, growing, and providing the best possible care for our patients. 🩺🐾

VMC is proud to have two Criticalists and 12 Emergency Veterinarians on staff, providing advanced emergency and critical care when pets need us most. 🐕🐾🦴

In this video, Dr. Buesing, one of our Emergency Veterinarians, treats a sweet Yorkie who presented to our emergency service. Morgan and Dakota work alongside Dr. Buesing to perform the patient’s initial diagnostics, while Macara helps care for our hospitalized patients. 🐈❤️

It takes an entire team working together to provide exceptional care for every patient!
