VMC is proud to have two Criticalists and 12 Emergency Veterinarians on staff, providing advanced emergency and critical care when pets need us most. 🐕🐾🦴

In this video, Dr. Buesing, one of our Emergency Veterinarians, treats a sweet Yorkie who presented to our emergency service. Morgan and Dakota work alongside Dr. Buesing to perform the patient’s initial diagnostics, while Macara helps care for our hospitalized patients. 🐈❤️

It takes an entire team working together to provide exceptional care for every patient!

When Someone Yells, “Is There a Doctor Here?” ….but You’re an Ophthalmologist

08/19/2026

Every day at 7 AM and 7 PM, our staff gathers for rounds to go through every hospitalized patient. We talk about each pet’s treatment plan and any changes since the last shift. It keeps the team on the same page, so our doctors know exactly where things stand with your pet.

We have doctors dedicated specifically to hospitalized patients and we also have doctors dedicated to our outpatients. Having a team devoted just to inpatient care means the pets staying with us get more attention and true one-on-one care.

She’s almost here! We are now taking appointments for Cardiology beginning Sept 15, 2026.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Alix Saavedra, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology) to the Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch team! ❤️🐾

She will officially join us on Tuesday, September 15th, bringing specialty cardiology services to VMC.

Dr. Saavedra also has a special interest in interventional cardiology which we plan to offer in the near future. Interventional cardiology is a branch of cardiology that treats heart problems using minimally invasive procedures (usually by passing catheters through blood vessels as opposed to open chest surgery). Some common Interventional procedures include: pacemaker implantation, treatment for pulmonic stenosis, treatment for PDA, and other catheter based treatments.

We look forward to introducing her to our clients, referring veterinarians, and community. ❤️

Severe heat advisory in effect from Saturday, August 15th to Friday, August 21st. ☀️

Every year during the summer we see many pets succumb to heat stroke. It takes much less time than you think. Dogs cannot cool themselves in the same way we do making them very susceptible to heat illness.

Remember that early morning and evening hours aren’t necessarily a safe time either. During this time of year, the heat and humidity can remain dangerously high even after the sun starts to go down. 🌞

Dogs can develop life-threatening heat stroke from running or strenuous exercise, even in the morning or evening hours. Keep activity short, provide plenty of water, and watch your pet closely. 🌡️ 🥵
