I’m not a roper but Quincy is proving he can handle it pretty well I like a horse that makes you look good. I have only roped on the ground so he’s been very patient while I figure out my coordination.

It’s always fun when the ditch you cross every day, like it’s no big deal, suddenly has 1” of water in it.

*Pay special attention to when I pause and wait/reward him.

* notice I get low with him to encourage him to keep low and keep his feet on the ground instead of jumping*

1.) When he jumps across the first time I try not to interfere with his reaction (often times a big reaction from the person gets a bigger reaction from the horse)

2.) The jump across is smaller and I put very little energy or care into that but I can see his mind is shifting.

3.)Quincy slows down and he takes small slow steps toward the water and doesn’t react when his toes touch the water. I immediately reward with a complete release of pressure, verbal encouragement, and wait for him to leave. Eating grass for him, not every horse, is just another positive reward for his actions and it helps him slow down.

Waiting: takes the pressure off the action and allows him to process what has/hasn’t happened when the action is complete.

4.) I let him leave when he is ready which allowed him to step in with the hind foot by choice and zero pressure from me.

5.) Repeat the last time just to get back to the other side and finish.

This process took around 45 minutes to complete successfully and with little drama. I also realize using I’m using his bridle but I didn’t have his halter with me at the time next time I will start with the halter as it’s definitely more ideal. @ @ @

Nothing better to do on a hot day than explore the river side and river on a solid horse! This is only his second time riding here since he’s been home with me. And the improvements he made were about 80% better than the last time! He’s a smart kid!

I had an amazing day with the family on the lake. Then came home and snuck in a quick ba****ck ride on Quincy. What a beautiful night! Here’s a shot of Chester enjoying his sunset dinner tonight. It’s been an amazing day, well balanced with family, horses, and sunsets.

I took Quincy for a quick ride down the road and into the subdivision today after our amazing ride… this was his first time completing the loop. On the ranch he always went out so confidently but, the subdivision offers so many opportunities for him to be introduced to new things like moving vehicles, people, neighborhood dogs barking, people walking their dogs, large scary rocks, and the infamous scary trash cans. In the subdivision there are so many things that are odd to horses that people don’t think of. Quincy made the whole loop today for the first time, we’ve been gradually working on this. His biggest hurtle today was big scary rocks but he never over reacted. He really would have rather turned around and went the other way but with some redirection and light encouragement he managed to handle it pretty maturely. Overall a very successful experience for him!
At the begging and end of every session I load Quincy in a trailer and unload him. He’s gotten pretty comfortable in there!

It’s important to me that every horse I train loads in the trailer comfortably and safely. I must have control of every foot inside and outside of the trailer this allows me to keep us both safe at all times. Unloading him twice each session allows him to get confident and comfortable without the extra pressure of leaving the property and it only takes a couple extra mins each time I load him.

This is our basic warm up if I do ground work first. Longline a nice forward walk, disengage the hindquarters, disengage the forehand, backing in a circle, and leg yields. Once I’m mounted I try not to go straight into the grind but we walk around and it gives me time to check in and see where his mind is at for the day. Then I work with what is presenting itself that day.

Another beautiful day on a good horse!
