🎃 Halloween Hazards: Xylitol 🍬🐾

Our Halloween Hazards series continues! Today’s hazard is one pet owners may not expect: Xylitol.

Xylitol is an artificial sweetener found in some sugar-free candies, gum, baked goods, and other products. While it’s safe for people, xylitol can be extremely dangerous for dogs. Even small amounts can cause a rapid drop in blood sugar and may lead to serious complications, including liver damage.

🍬 Before sharing or accidentally leaving out any Halloween treats, check the ingredient list for xylitol.

🚨 If you think your pet has consumed xylitol, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact the Pet Poison Helpline and Gallatin Veterinary Hospital immediately for guidance and treatment.

Welcome to the first post in our Halloween Hazards series! Over the next few weeks, Gallatin Veterinary Hospital will be sharing some common Halloween dangers that every pet owner should know about.

First up: CHOCOLATE. 🍫

Chocolate contains stimulants that can be toxic to pets and may cause serious problems with the heart and nervous system. Dogs are especially likely to get into Halloween candy, so keeping chocolate safely out of reach should be a top priority this season!

🚨 If your pet eats chocolate:

No Thoughts... Just Churu. 🐱💛

This sweet kitty came to us feeling very fearful, especially after a history of some tough veterinary visits. But today, with a little patience, plenty of reassurance, and lots of Churu, things looked very different. 🥰

With the help of Haley and Dr. Rice, they were able to relax, enjoy their favorite treat, and have a happy, low-stress visit. Sometimes, a little Churu goes a long way! 🐾

We’re so proud of this brave kitty and the trust they’re building with us, one positive visit at a time. 💕

Rabies is a serious and deadly disease but it’s also preventable. Keeping your dogs and cats up to date on their rabies vaccinations is one of the simplest and most important ways you can protect your pets, your family, and your community.

Even pets who spend most of their time indoors can be exposed to wildlife, including bats, skunks, raccoons, and foxes. And once symptoms of rabies appear, the disease is almost always fatal.

🐾 September is National Service Dog Month! 🐾

This month, we’re celebrating the incredible service dogs who help people with disabilities live with greater independence, confidence, and freedom. 💙 This National Service Dog Month is especially meaningful to us, as our veterinary assistant Haley has had the incredible opportunity to help raise future service dogs for Canine Companions, an organization that has placed over 8,000 service dog teams since their founding in 1975.

Service dog puppy raising is in 18-month commitment focused on socialization, training, and preparing each puppy for their future role. Haley raises these puppies, loves them, trains them, and then sends them off for six months of professional training before they start their working career.

Two of the dogs she has raised have gone on to make an incredible difference in the lives of others. One is partnered with a woman who uses a wheelchair, helping her navigate life with greater independence. The other works alongside a deputy prosecutor, providing comfort and support to children who have to navigate the legal system. Haley's not done raising puppies, and is continuing the journey with Brooks, a 5-month-old Labrador Retriever just beginning his service dog career. We are so proud of Haley for taking on this task, and we can't wait to see where Brooks' path takes him! 🐕‍🦺
