We cannot restore our way out of a water quality problem we continue to create.
LKGA is deeply concerned about the continued use of shallow sewage injection wells throughout the Florida Keys—and, frankly, we believe we need to be asking hard questions about deep-well injection as a long-term solution as well.
Recent reporting from Friends of the Lower Keys (FOLKs) on wastewater from Key West Resort Utility's Stock Island treatment facility should concern everyone who cares about the health of our nearshore waters.
We spend enormous amounts of money and effort on water quality science, habitat protection and restoration. But those investments will never deliver the gains we expect if our wastewater infrastructure continues allowing sewage effluent to enter the ecosystem we are trying to restore.
This is fixable. Better infrastructure isn't a suggestion, it's a must. But fixing it takes two things: money and a willingness to acknowledge the problem and address it. The utility districts have one of those. But we need them to stop contributing to the problem in the first place.
For LKGA, that has to be part of any serious conversation about the future health of the Florida Keys ecosystem.
