The common jests about barrel racers’ obsession with bits carries some weight the tools we choose to communicate with our partner can make or break a run. Most importantly, not all bits fit all hands or horses. Combine the overwhelming amount of different bits available with the unique style of each person’s hands, and you have endless combinations for success or frustration.

Choosing the right bit isn’t just about copying what your favorite pro uses or what your friend down the road recommended. Evaluating your own riding style and the way you use your hands in relation to the horse’s style are important first steps when looking for that magic bridle.

👻🎃 IT’S SPOOKTOBER! 🎃👻

And with that comes the return of a somewhat normal work schedule for me! I am officially OFF the crazy work schedule, which means more availability for lessons!

One important thing: I ALWAYS have to check with the arenas to make sure the time slots are available before confirming lessons. So send me what you’re looking for, and I’ll coordinate with the arena!

**** I do not provide horses for lessons****

Let’s get those horses spooky-season ready. 🎃

Be smart about new horses. Sharing is not caring.

Carter learning to lope in random places

Carter’s end goal is to make a well rounded creature for our good friend Pagebrook Farm. Carter is well on her way there. A very nice 3 yr old

I don’t expect a horse to go somewhere new and never look around. I do expect them to keep checking back in with me.

When one becomes distracted, I try not to pick a fight over what caught its attention. I give it a familiar job move the feet, follow the feel, soften through the body and wait for my direction.

The goal isn’t a horse that never notices its surroundings. It’s a horse that can notice something new without mentally leaving the rider.

Don’t let them become tourists. Give them something they understand and teach them to come back to you.
