Good grooming is about so much more than showing up in cute, coordinated outfits. It reflects the time, care, and attention you put into the whole horse. 🐴
A beautiful, shiny coat starts from the inside out — with good nutrition, consistent grooming, thoughtful training, and yes… plenty of currying. 🪮
There’s nothing I love more than seeing a well-turned-out, happy horse. We’ve talked about tails before, and today we’re talking about one of the most underrated parts of grooming: currying.
So why is currying so important?
Beyond the obvious benefit of loosening dirt, mud, and dead hair, currying helps promote circulation, encourages shedding, supports myofascial release, warms up the muscles, and brings the horse’s natural oils to the surface of the coat.
Fascia is the thin, fibrous connective tissue that surrounds and supports the muscles, organs, nerves, and bones throughout the body. Think of it as the body’s “Saran Wrap” — designed to be flexible, smooth, and able to glide freely.
When done well, currying can act as a form of myofascial release. That rhythmic, circular motion does more than clean the coat; it helps maintain the health and elasticity of the horse’s connective tissue while giving you a chance to really feel what’s happening underneath your hands.
Personally, I love using a metal curry comb, but feel is everything. You have to know your horse and pay attention to their response. For some, it may be too much. But for many horses, I find they absolutely love it — and it does an incredible job of helping you connect with the fascia, muscles, and overall feel of the horse.
Good grooming isn’t just about appearance. It’s horsemanship.
