We seem to be seeing more copperhead than rattlesnake bites so far this year, both in dogs and cats. If you think your pet has a snake bite, please let us know as soon as possible, or get them to an emergency clinic as soon as possible. There are good treatments available if we can get to them quick enough.

There is also a rattlesnake bite vaccine that can provide protection if given before the bite. Ask us about snake bite protection for your pet with the vaccine.

Too often we are confronted with clients who can not (or will not) afford the care their pets need. Occasionally they get very aggressive with "if you really cared about animals you would do it for free" --- well, WE CARE and WE CAN'T. Mortgage payments, property taxes, electricity, water, telephone, computer service, garbage pickup, repairs, equipment rentals/purchase, medications, supplies, insurance, staff paychecks, and general maintenance of the clinic all cost, just like any other business, and most at commercial rates --- and ALL of that before I can take even a dollar to go buy my lunch.

If you know you can't afford to take care of a dependent creature, please reconsider or start making preparations before you add in that furry family member. Don't scrimp on vaccinations and deworming, especially for a new puppy or kitten. Know when they need to be spayed/neutered and how much to set aside for that. And then consider pet insurance for the unexpected.

We can almost guarantee that some time in your pet's life they will need more than food, water, shelter, and love. Be prepared . . .

By February 1st, cats will be starting to come back in season. Dogs come in season year round every 4-6 months. Make a plan to prevent accidental/unplanned/unwanted puppies and kittens now. Yes, they can get pregnant the very first time they come in season. And, yes too, a c-section or pregnant spay costs more that a routine spay surgery.

Spent the day with my wonderful staff at the Bowie "Clear the Shelter" event. Did some microchipping for identification, and handed out some discount coupons for spay surgeries to help with stray pet overpopulation issues. The Lord blessed us with overcast skies and a breeze. Hasn't hit the 100+ degree forecast for today yet. Overall, a very good day to help homeless creatures find their new families!!!

I was in practice in the Army at Fort Sill Oklahoma at the time when a feline/cat virus first mutated into parvovirus in dogs. We were presented with horribly sick patients that for the most part died or were euthanized for humane reasons. Once the virus was identified, we started giving cat vaccine to dogs with a hope and a prayer for SOME protection. Now, because of our current parvovirus vaccine/vaccination schedule, many people have never seen a dog suffer with Parvo --- thank Heavens!!!

Puppy vaccination timing can look straightforward on paper, but maternally derived antibodies add an important layer of complexity.

For the DA2PP series, AAHA recommends beginning vaccination at 6–8 weeks of age and administering subsequent doses 2–4 weeks apart, with the final dose given after 16 weeks of age.

Those early maternal antibodies help protect puppies, but they can also interfere with the response to distemper and parvovirus vaccines, which is why timing across the series matters.

For 18yrs I did the S/N Clinic at the Humane Society of Wichita County --- 30-60 surgeries a week while still working full time at Bowie Pet Clinic. Even at just 30, our lowest number per week, I myself personally performed 28,000+ S/N surgeries so that those dogs/cats weren't out there making more unwanted babies. But people have to bring them in, and it does cost money even with those of us who keep that price down as low as humanly possible. No, even though we care very much about animals, we can't do it for free . . .

We are going to drop a truth bomb on you guys...

We are bombarded daily with requests from all over Texas from individuals and organizations alike begging us to come to their area. We appreciate the fan base, but it is not feasible for one dr to do that. We just can't be everywhere!

And everyone who reaches out to us thinks their situation is worse than anyone else's...but here's the truth bomb...it's the entire state of Texas. It's all overwhelmed with unwanted puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats. ALL. OF. IT.
Most of the southern states as well.

Educate. Your friends, your neighbors, your family on the pros of spay/neuter.
Advocate. Step up not out.
Feeding a stray? Make sure it's spayed/neutered. If you can feed it, you can/should spay or neuter it.
Write to your congressman and ask what they are doing about this problem? It will take ALL OF US to get our voices heard in Austin.
We are definitely doing our part...we spayed and neutered over 88,000 animals in the last 5 years at affordable rates or with vouchers.
We are on track to spay/neuter over 20,000 animals in 2026 alone!
