Honoring the four-legged heroes of Ground Zero 🐾🇺🇸

Following the events of September 11, over 300 dogs deployed to Ground Zero to assist with search, rescue, recovery, and comfort efforts. Working 12-hour shifts alongside their handlers and dedicated veterinary teams, these extraordinary canines played a vital role on the pile:

Search & Rescue Dogs: Certified by FEMA to track living human scent, SAR dogs tirelessly searched the rubble for survivors. In fact, a search dog helped locate the last living person rescued from Ground Zero 27 hours after the collapse.

Cadaver Dogs: As operations shifted to recovery, specialized dogs helped locate human remains to bring closure to grieving families.

Keeping Spirits Up: To combat discouragement during long days of searching with few survivors, handlers regularly staged "mock finds" so the dogs could stay motivated and feel successful.

Therapy Dogs: Canines like Nikie provided essential emotional support and comfort to exhausted firefighters and first responders amidst the destruction.

Their bravery, devotion, and resilience remain an unforgettable chapter of history. 🐶❤️
