I have this picture of her from that age.

That's what genealogy and photo preservation are really about — the invisible thread connecting us to people who came before us, and to the people who will come after us.

This Memorial Day week: dig out those old family photos. Label them. Write down what you know. Start that family tree.

You probably have them too — tucked in a closet, a shoebox under a bed, a bin labeled "misc" in the garage.

Old prints. Slides. Film negatives. Maybe even home movies on VHS or 8mm reels.

These are the ONLY copies of your family history. And they are fading. Literally.

This week, can I challenge you to find ONE box of old photos and take the first step toward getting them digitized?

What if your phone died tonight and you lost everything?

Printed photos can't be hacked. They don't need charging. They don't get corrupted or accidentally deleted.

There is something irreplaceable about holding a physical photo in your hands — about leaving albums on a shelf that your grandchildren can flip through someday, even when the technology has changed 10 times over.

This week, inspired by our Memorial Day theme of honoring memories...

After yesterday's blog about digital legacy, I've had SO many people say:

"I don't even know where my photos are."

Your photos are probably living in at least 3–4 places right now:
📱 Your phone's camera roll
☁️ iCloud or Google Photos (maybe)
💻 An old laptop you haven't opened in years
📦 That external hard drive somewhere in a drawer

Here's the hard truth: scattered = at risk.

This week, do ONE thing: check that your photos are automatically backing up somewhere. Go to Settings on your phone right now. That's it.

This Memorial Day, I want to ask you something that might feel a little heavy — but is so important.

If something happened to you tomorrow... what would happen to your photos?

Not the printed ones in albums. I mean the 12,000+ photos on your phone. The videos of your kids being silly. The screenshot of your mom's handwritten recipe. The photo you took of Dad last Thanksgiving, not knowing it would be the last one.

Could your family find them? Access them? Or would they be locked behind a password they'd never know?
