Happy Vet Tech Appreciation Week! 🐾💙

This week, we're celebrating not only our RVTs, but also our Behavior Therapy Technicians (BTTs), who also play a crucial role in the success of every behavior case we see!

Our amazing RVTs and BTTs bring a unique combination of skills and expertise that goes beyond traditional veterinary care and dog training. Their knowledge, compassion, and dedication make such a difference for our patients and the people who love them.

TVBC wouldn't be the same without this incredible team! Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to helping animals and their people succeed. 💙🐾

Did you know veterinary behavior medicine isn't just for dogs and cats? 🦜

Birds can experience behavior concerns, too – and understanding those concerns often means looking beyond the behavior itself.

Excessive vocalization, biting, and feather-damaging behavior can involve a combination of medical, environmental, social, and learning-related factors.

At The Veterinary Behavior Center, we also see avian patients for behavior consultations! Our approach considers the individual patient and the circumstances surrounding their behavior to help guide appropriate recommendations.

Have a feathered family member or patient? We'd love to help you learn more about veterinary behavior care.

Ever Googled something your dog does and ended up with 14 completely different explanations? 🙋‍♀️

The internet has no shortage of opinions about dog behavior.

But barking, growling, hiding, or reacting can have different underlying causes. The behavior you see is only one piece of the picture.

That's why veterinary behavior care looks at the individual animal, their history, health, environment, and the circumstances surrounding the behavior.

Google can be a starting point. It just can't tell you the whole story about *your* dog.

What's the most confusing dog behavior question you've ever Googled?

Management deserves more credit.
Cross the street. Close the blinds. Use the barrier. Take the quieter route.
These choices may look simple, but changing the environment can reduce exposure to situations an animal isn’t ready to navigate.
Management doesn’t mean giving up on training or treatment. It can work alongside other parts of a behavior plan–and skipping an unnecessary challenge can be a completely reasonable choice.
There’s value in knowing when the environment can do some of the work.

We spend a lot of time talking about behavior around here, but today we want the very specific details.

Pick one:

Current obsession?
Strongest opinion?
Weirdest habit?

Tell us about your dog in the comments. Bonus points for extreme specificity.

We’ll start: Our team member’s poodle, Walter, BOLTS out the front door and makes a beeline for his favorite tree. Every. Single. Time.

Why? He remains convinced that today will finally be the day he catches a squirrel.

His success rate is currently 0%. His confidence remains 100%. 🐾

Why do we call it Road Map to Real Life?

Because the goal isn't to jump straight from foundational skills to the hardest real-world situations.

Over four weeks, Road Map gives carefully matched dogs opportunities to practice around one another while working through a progression:

Week 1: Defensive Driving
Week 2: Navigation Systems
Week 3: Scenic Routes
Week 4: Planning Your Road Trip

Each week builds toward using familiar skills with another dog present and navigating more of the situations that come up outside of a controlled practice environment.

Think your dog is ready for the next stretch of the road? Start with our candidacy screening form at the link in bio.

Taking your dog out into the world can involve a lot of planning when other dogs are part of the equation.

Road Map to Real Life returns this October.

Our 4-week, semi-private program is designed for dogs who already have foundational skills for navigating reactivity and are ready to practice with another dog present. We carefully match two dogs for weekly 30-minute sessions focused on proximity, parallel activities, scent swapping, campus walks and, when appropriate, further social interaction.

Think your dog may be ready to take those skills on the road? Complete our candidacy screening form at the link in bio. Our team will review it to determine whether Road Map is a good fit and may recommend a complimentary 15-minute in-person evaluation.

We’re taking a little breather! ☀️

TVBC will be closed Monday, September 7 in observance of Labor Day. We’ll return to normal business hours Tuesday, September 8.

Wishing our patients, families, and team a safe and relaxing long weekend! 🐾

At TVBC, our room design and enrichment are intentional – created to accommodate the patients and cases we see every day.

The elaborate Tuscan décor? That’s just an unexpected staff perk. 😂

Because who said a pot filler wasn’t a veterinary clinic requirement?!

What does a veterinary behavior appointment actually look like?

The answer: it depends on the patient.

Some appointments are active and hands-on. Others involve observing, adapting the environment, practicing skills, or simply giving a patient the time and space they need.

There isn’t one picture of what veterinary behavior care “should” look like – and that’s kind of the point. Our team meets each patient and family where they are and works from there. 💙
