Tackling kids. Counter surfing. Eating p**p. Knocking over an 87-year-old mother-in-law.

Harrison wasn’t trying to cause trouble. He was a 10-month-old Golden who loved everyone a little too much, all at full speed.

He spent 28 days with me in board & train. We kept all that joy and gave it some direction: calm greetings, manners around food, and a dog you can actually trust around kids. His family got daily photos and videos the whole time.

Then this text came in: off leash, walking past a family with three little kids he once would’ve tackled, he stayed right by his owner’s side.

In Roger’s words, “a completely different dog… but still has his sparkly personality; it’s just in check.”

Puppy energy is great.

That’s how Stephanie described walks with Pepper before training.

Pepper is a sweet girl, but rabbits, squirrels, cars and other dogs all came first.

Every walk turned into a tug-of-war.

Pepper went through our board & train program and came home already walking nicely.

Her family didn’t have to start from scratch.

They just learned how to keep it going.

In Stephanie’s words: “Having her back feels like we have a new dog.”

Welcome to the pack, Charlie 🐾

She’s 10 months old, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, and she has no idea how big she is yet.

That shows up as jumping, pulling on the leash when she spots another dog, and a lot of excitement with nowhere to put it.

Nothing’s wrong with her.

She’s a big, happy puppy.

Her owners wanted to set her up early, before small habits turn into big ones.

What we’re working on:

→ Leash skills, especially around other dogs

→ Channeling that excitement instead of letting it run the show

→ Polite greetings with people and dogs

→ Off-leash recall for hikes

She’s in our day training program, so she gets all the same work as board & train and still sleeps in her own bed every night.

Obedience is great.

A down at the brewery, a sit at the door, you’ll use those every day.

But commands only work while you’re giving them.

What you really want is a dog you can trust even when they’re not in a command.

That comes from life skills.

A dog that doesn’t chase the deer on the trail because it’s learned not to, not because you got a “leave it” out in time.

A dog that can walk past another dog, whether in heel or not, settle at home and just coexist with you.

That’s how we train at Dogwood.

Every dog gets solid obedience, and we put just as much into life skills, out on trails, downtown and at breweries, the places you’ll actually take them.

It makes for a dog that’s easier to live with, and honestly, a happier dog.

Meet Augie!

This guy is quite the mix, with everything from St. Bernard to Australian Shepherd in him, and he’s joining us for our 28 day Board and Train program.

His owners had already put some training into him, and it helped build a foundation.

But eventually they started running into the situations where having a dog who knows some commands isn’t quite enough.

Leash walking had become a struggle, and chasing bunnies, other critters, bikes, and sometimes runners on the trail was creating some pretty stressful moments.

That’s where we’re going to spend a lot of our time with Augie.

Building reliable on and off leash obedience, improving his leash skills, and teaching him how to make better choices around the things that get him a bit excited.

We want Augie to be the kind of dog his owners can bring with them around Boulder, whether they’re walking through town, hitting the trails, or just getting out and enjoying the day together.

Meet Freyja!

This cool little Aussie is joining us for our 28 day Board and Train, and her owners are taking the opportunity to get the important stuff in place early.

They want a dog they can take with them.

Hiking, exploring, traveling, and whatever else life throws their way.

So rather than waiting for problems to pop up, we’re putting the foundation in now.

We’ll be working on the obedience, leash skills, recall, socialization, and real world reliability she’ll need to be a good adventure partner as she grows up.

Freyja’s got plenty of personality already.

Now we’re just giving her the skills to go with it.

Welcome Luna. 🐾

This sweet little Cattle Dog pup has joined us for our 28 day Board and Train program, and we’re excited to have her with us.

Like a lot of puppy and young dog owners, Luna’s owner isn’t waiting for problems to develop.

Instead, she wanted to get ahead of the game and give Luna the foundation she’ll need to be successful for years to come.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be focusing on all the essentials. Obedience, leash manners, recall, social skills, and the everyday habits that will help Luna and her owner navigate the world confidently together.

It’s one thing for a dog to listen in a controlled environment.

It’s another thing entirely when you’re downtown, people are walking by, food is on the ground, kids are running around, and there are a hundred things competing for your dog’s attention.

That’s why we spend so much time getting our dogs out into places like this.

Harrison has been making some huge progress, and today he got the chance to show off those skills on Pearl Street. These are the moments that matter because this is what his owners actually want to do with him. Go places together. Bring him along. Enjoy having him as part of their life without constantly worrying about pulling, jumping, or what he might do next.

For us, training isn’t about what a dog can do in when everything is predictable. It’s about what they can do when real life happens.

Welcome Storm! 🐾

This Briard/Australian Shepherd mix is joining us for our 28 day Board and Train program, and he couldn’t be a sweeter guy.

His owner has already put in some work training him and has built a nice foundation to start from.

Like many dog owners, though, he reached a point where he needed a little extra help turning those skills into something more reliable in the real world.

The biggest goals for Storm are improving his leash manners, building a reliable recall, and creating the kind of consistency that allows his owner to trust him no matter the situation.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be working on turning what Storm already knows and teaching new skills his owner can confidently rely on, whether they’re out on a walk, exploring a trail, or just navigating everyday life together.

Welcome Harrison! 🐾

This 10 month old Golden Retriever is everything you’d expect from a young Golden. Friendly, energetic, and convinced that everyone he meets is his new best friend.

While that’s part of what makes him such a great dog, his excitement can sometimes get the best of him. Jumping on people, knocking kids over, stealing slices of pizza, and generally struggling to contain all that enthusiasm has made life a little more challenging than his owners would like.

They’ve already put some work into training, but reached out when they realized they needed a little extra help turning Harrison into the companion they know he can be.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be focusing on loose leash walking, a reliable recall, lots of public exposure, and all the obedience and life skills he heeds to successfully navigate the world with his family.

If you’ve ever owned a young Golden Retriever, you probably know exactly what Harrison’s owners have been dealing with.

The personality is great. The self control... not quite there yet.
