Dogwood Canine Academy Empowering Dogs. Enriching Lives

06/09/2026

It’s one thing for a dog to listen in a controlled environment.

It’s another thing entirely when you’re downtown, people are walking by, food is on the ground, kids are running around, and there are a hundred things competing for your dog’s attention.

That’s why we spend so much time getting our dogs out into places like this.

Harrison has been making some huge progress, and today he got the chance to show off those skills on Pearl Street. These are the moments that matter because this is what his owners actually want to do with him. Go places together. Bring him along. Enjoy having him as part of their life without constantly worrying about pulling, jumping, or what he might do next.

For us, training isn’t about what a dog can do in when everything is predictable. It’s about what they can do when real life happens.

If you’ve ever wished you could enjoy places like this with your dog without worrying about pulling, jumping, or constant management, that’s exactly what our Board and Train program is designed to help you achieve.

Welcome Storm! 🐾

This Briard/Australian Shepherd mix is joining us for our 28 day Board and Train program, and he couldn’t be a sweeter guy.

His owner has already put in some work training him and has built a nice foundation to start from.

Like many dog owners, though, he reached a point where he needed a little extra help turning those skills into something more reliable in the real world.

The biggest goals for Storm are improving his leash manners, building a reliable recall, and creating the kind of consistency that allows his owner to trust him no matter the situation.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be working on turning what Storm already knows and teaching new skills his owner can confidently rely on, whether they’re out on a walk, exploring a trail, or just navigating everyday life together.

Welcome Harrison! 🐾

This 10 month old Golden Retriever is everything you’d expect from a young Golden. Friendly, energetic, and convinced that everyone he meets is his new best friend.

While that’s part of what makes him such a great dog, his excitement can sometimes get the best of him. Jumping on people, knocking kids over, stealing slices of pizza, and generally struggling to contain all that enthusiasm has made life a little more challenging than his owners would like.

They’ve already put some work into training, but reached out when they realized they needed a little extra help turning Harrison into the companion they know he can be.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be focusing on loose leash walking, a reliable recall, lots of public exposure, and all the obedience and life skills he heeds to successfully navigate the world with his family.

If you’ve ever owned a young Golden Retriever, you probably know exactly what Harrison’s owners have been dealing with.

The personality is great. The self control... not quite there yet.

Stay tuned for his progress over the next few weeks.

Off leash training is not just putting an e collar on a dog and hoping for the best.

If a dog is never actually tested with real freedom, real distractions, and real opportunities to make choices, then it is not truly off leash trained.

That is why we spend so much time getting our dogs out into the real world.

Hikes, trails, parks, busy environments, and situations where the dog actually has to think, stay engaged, and choose cooperation even when there are better options around.

The real goal is building the kind of understanding and trust that still holds up when the leash comes off.

This is where true reliability is built.

Summer is right around the corner, which means more hikes, more adventures, and more time outside with our dogs.

But none of that freedom matters if you can’t confidently call your dog back when it counts.

Clyde has been making huge progress with his recall during his stay with us, and it’s opening the door for the kind of freedom his owner was hoping for from the beginning. A reliable recall is not just about obedience, it’s about safety, trust, and being able to enjoy life together without constantly worrying your dog is going to take off.

If you’ve been struggling with recall and want to feel more confident taking your dog out into the world this summer, now is the time to start putting the work in.

Welcome Clyde. 🐾

This 13 month old Border Collie/Lab/Pit mix is as sweet as they come and full of personality.

His owner reached out because while Clyde loves being out on hikes and adventures, his recall has become a big concern. Like a lot of young dogs with freedom and excitement, he’s started making his own decisions out on the trails and not always coming back when called.

On top of that, Clyde can get a little too excited around people, which leads to lots of jumping.

During his stay with us, we’ll be focusing on building the obedience foundation every dog needs to succeed, while putting a huge emphasis on creating a reliable recall his owner can trust in the real world.

The goal is to help Clyde and his owner get back to enjoying hikes and adventures together with a lot more freedom, confidence, and peace of mind.

Welcome Moon! 🌙

Moon is joining us for our Board and Train program.

After already going through a full training program somewhere else, the reactivity her owner was really hoping to solve never actually got better, and it’s continued to make everyday life a lot more stressful than it needs to be.

Our biggest focus with Moon will be addressing that reactivity in a way that creates real change.

That means not just stopping the behavior in the moment or managing it with obedience, but helping her build better associations and more positive experiences around other dogs so she can start feeling differently about them too.

We’ll also be tightening up her obedience along the way so her owner has clearer, more reliable ways to work with her out in the real world.

The goal is to help Moon and her owner get back to enjoying life together with more freedom, more confidence, and a lot less stress!

Welcome Remy! 🐾

This little Norwich Terrier pup is as cute as they come and full of personality and energy.

Her owners reached out because, like a lot of puppy owners, they just needed a little help getting things on the right track.

Between potty training, leash reactivity, and all the typical puppy antics, it can feel like a lot to handle on your own.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be working on building a solid foundation for Remy. That means social skills, obedience, better manners around the house, and helping her learn how to move through the world with a bit more calm and clarity.

Welcome Bolt 🐾

This seven month old German Shepherd has joined us for our 28 day Board and Train program.

His owner reached out after several months of feeling completely overwhelmed.

Bolt is a young working breed with a ton of drive and, up until now, very few outlets for it. The result has been exactly what you might expect.

Constantly nipping and biting that left bruises, destruction around the house, and a level of intensity that made everyday life stressful.

The good news is that dogs like Bolt aren’t “bad.”

They’re usually just dogs with a lot of drive and nowhere appropriate to put it.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be working to channel that energy into productive outlets while building solid obedience, house manners, social skills, and real world reliability.

The goal is to help Bolt become a dog his owner can actually enjoy living with again.

If your young dog feels like too much right now, you’re not alone. With the right structure and guidance, a lot can change.

Stay tuned for his progress over the next few weeks
