👂🐾 WONDER ABOUT IT WEDNESDAY: What’s REALLY going on in those ears?!

The head shaking. The scratching. The funky smell. The mysterious brown gunk. 👀 Your dog’s ears are trying to tell you something!

Ear problems generally fall into a few different camps:

🦠 Bacterial — often red, irritated, painful and sometimes smelly.
🍞 Yeast — commonly waxy, itchy and known for that distinct musty odor.
🌿 Allergy/inflammation related — food or environmental allergies can create chronic inflammation that sets the ear up for trouble.
🕷️ Parasites/foreign material — mites, plant material and other debris can also cause major irritation.

And sometimes there’s more than one thing happening at once.

We gently clean/flush accessible debris, soothe the outer ear, and use appropriate products/techniques to help reduce moisture getting trapped during the bath.

⚠️ But an infection is different from a dirty ear. Once an ear is painful, swollen, producing discharge, strongly odorous, or repeatedly causing head shaking, it needs a veterinarian. Yeast, bacteria, mites and other causes can look surprisingly similar, and the right treatment depends on what’s actually growing in there.

Because sometimes that “dirty ear” isn’t dirty at all…it’s asking for help. 👂👑🐾

Look who James, Fate and I ran into — Boulder City’s very own Chilly Jilly'z The Patio at Chilly Jilly'z Jill & Kobe with Turf Magik! 🌱🐶

There’s something extra fun about being at a HUGE pet-industry show like SUPERZOO and finding familiar faces from our own little town! Of course we had to stop, talk dogs and grab a picture. 📸🐾

AND… The Paw Queen definitely didn’t come home empty-handed. 😂👑 We brought home LOTS of goodies from earthbath for my Royal Pack! 🛍️🫧🐶 Stay tuned because I can’t wait to show you what we found!

🔥🐾 TOO HOT FOR DOGS TUESDAY! 🐾🔥
Here in the desert, “hot” isn’t just uncomfortable for our dogs—it can become dangerous FAST.

Dogs don’t cool themselves the way we do. They rely heavily on panting and limited sweating through their paw pads. Once their body temperature starts climbing, they can go from overheated to a medical emergency frighteningly quickly.

☀️ Today’s Royal Reminder:
• Walk EARLY in the morning or after the ground has cooled
• Check pavement with the back of your hand before letting paws touch it
• Always provide fresh, cool water and shade
• Keep exercise SHORT in extreme temperatures—even athletic dogs can overheat
• NEVER leave a dog in a parked vehicle—not even “for a minute”
• Watch for excessive panting, thick drool, bright-red gums/tongue, weakness, vomiting, staggering or collapse

And remember: a dog wanting to play does NOT mean their body can safely handle the heat. Some dogs will keep going long after they should have stopped.

👑 Being a good dog parent sometimes means being the party pooper who says, “Nope! We’re going back inside.” 😂

Your best friend depends on YOU to make the safe choice. 💗🐾

🐕‍🦺 THAT VEST DOESN’T MAKE YOUR DOG A SERVICE DOG. 👀

This one is personal. ❤️

As an IIH (Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension/Pseudotumor Cerebri) warrior, I have my very own service dogs. 🐕‍🦺 And as a certified service-dog trainer, I know firsthand just how HUGE this job description actually is.

I also see dogs presented as “service dogs” displaying behaviors that SCREAM:

🚨 “I HAVE NOT BEEN TRAINED OR PREPARED FOR THIS JOB!”

So let’s bust some of the biggest myths:

🐾 Registered/certified = service dog? ❌ NO. The ADA requires neither.

🐾 A vest makes it official? ❌ NOPE. Amazon sells vests. Amazon doesn’t sell service dogs. 😂

🐾 They must be professionally trained? ❌ FALSE. Handlers may train their own service dogs.

🐾 Emotional support = service dog? ❌ Not by itself. A service dog must be individually trained to perform work or tasks directly related to a disability.

🐾 Businesses can’t ask ANYTHING? ❌ FALSE. When the service isn’t obvious, they may ask:
1️⃣ Is the dog required because of a disability?
2️⃣ What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?

🐾 A service dog can NEVER be asked to leave? 🚨 FALSE!
Even a legitimate service dog can be required to leave if it is out of control and the handler doesn’t effectively regain control, or it isn’t housebroken.

🐾 One bark = FAKE? ❌ No. Service dogs are still dogs. Context matters. Repeated disruptive behavior without effective handler control is different.

🐾 They can wander because they’re “working”? ❌ NO. Service dogs must remain under their handler’s control.

🐾 Only Labs or Goldens qualify? ❌ FALSE. The ADA doesn’t restrict service dogs by breed or size.

🐾 A really obedient dog = service dog? ❌ THIS IS THE BIG ONE.

Sit. Stay. Heel. Place. Perfect manners.

NONE of those alone make a dog a service dog.

🐕‍🦺 A service dog is individually trained to perform disability-related work or tasks for the person who needs them.

And think about what we’re asking these dogs to do…

Ignore food.
Ignore strangers.
Ignore other dogs.
Navigate
