🐰 New research from CBEAM! ❤️
We’re proud to share our latest research on heart disease in rabbits and its impact on the future of rabbit health.

Our team just published a peer-reviewed paper describing three young, giant-breed male rabbits with dilated cardiomyopathy, a serious condition that causes the heart to become enlarged and less able to pump blood. Two of the rabbits were littermates, raising the possibility that genetics may play a role.

Heart disease has long been discussed as a concern in giant rabbits, but very little has been reported about heart disease in young rabbits. We currently don’t know which genetic factors might contribute to it.

So, why does this matter? 🧬

Our hope is that this paper will encourage more studies into the potential genetic causes of heart disease in rabbits. In the future, this could potentially help breeders identify rabbits carrying disease-associated genes and make informed breeding decisions, as is already commonly done in dogs.

There’s still a lot to learn, but every study brings us one step closer to healthier rabbits. We’re excited to help move exotic animal medicine forward! 🐇🔬

Please welcome Dr. Caitlin Cunningham to the CBEAM team!

While attending Bowling Green State University for her undergraduate degree, Dr. Cunningham started her animal career working as a wildlife rehabber at Nature's Nursery. She performed research on eastern box turtles and worked in the university's herpetology lab.

For veterinary school, she attended The Ohio State University while working at a small animal/exotic clinic. During veterinary school, she started the Exotic Animal Club at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and was an officer in the Zoo club. During her clinical year, she traveled across the US to learn from different exotic animal hospitals and wildlife rehabilitation facilities.

Upon graduation, Dr. Cunningham completed a one-year exotic animal medicine and surgery internship at Arizona Exotic Animal Hospital. She then stayed at that hospital to complete a two year Reptile/Amphibian medicine and surgery residency. Afterwards, she moved back to Ohio for a few years to work in private practice seeing exotics and small animals.

Since freshman year of undergraduate school, she has been a mom to a menagerie of scaled, furry, and feathered creatures. Currently, she has 18 pets that include tortoises, bearded dragons, tarantulas, finches, ball pythons, cats, rabbits, geckos, and so much more!

In Dr. Cunningham’s spare time, she enjoys crochet, yoga, attending concerts, and hiking.

Jimot-hay has shown up in several locations around our hospital this week. We don’t treat wildlife at CBEAM (we refer wildlife cases to PAWS or Sarvey Wildlife Care Center), but we have enjoyed watching the videos of this exotically shaped, funky little local guy living his best trash panda life.
