Meet Gerald, a boy whose road to where he stands today is remarkable. He came from a severe animal abuse case, starved nearly to the point of death, and arrived at Pitt County Animal Shelter barely able to walk. He spent months at the vet, slowly gaining weight and relearning how to simply be a dog — a story so powerful it made the news. What has emerged from all of that suffering is a gentle, easy, and deeply lovable boy.

Gerald's future family can expect a low-maintenance and loving companion. His foster could not say enough good things about him — he doesn’t jump, doesn’t destroy anything, is fully house-trained, and has claimed a cozy nest of pillows on the bed as his personal sanctuary. He loves dog bones, tough chew toys, and kids, with whom he is wonderfully gentle. He is dog selective and has a strong prey drive around squirrels, chickens, and cats, so a home without small animals would suit him best. After everything Gerald has been through, he deserves a calm, settled life.

Meet Dexter, a dog whose story begins in the hardest way imaginable, he was brought into a vet clinic at just four months old, severely underweight, flea ridden, and suffering from a broken leg, with his family requesting he be put down. His vet refused to give up on him and reached out to rescue instead, and from that single act of kindness, Dexter's whole life changed. The break was clean, his leg was cast, and week by week this resilient little boy healed completely, today you would never know anything had happened. What emerged from that difficult start is one of the happiest, most easy going, most loving dogs you will ever have the privilege of meeting.

He loves other dogs, cats, and even farm animals, and he is loyal to his people in a way that will make your heart full.

Dexter's future family can expect the whole package — a sweet, happy, and deeply loyal companion who is genuinely easy to love. Sadly, he has been caught in a painful moment where surrenders in the Carolinas far outnumber adoptions, and black dog syndrome and his size have worked against him in ways he never deserved. None of that changes who he is, a wonderful dog who simply needs someone to give him a chance.

Meet Maggie, a sweet and happy girl who was brought in by animal control with almost no hair and several open wounds. She has been treated with antibiotics and steroids and has come a long way since that first day, though several areas of hair loss remain on her body. Despite everything she has been through and everything she still carries visibly, Maggie has never been anything but gentle, loving, and an absolute joy to be around. Every foster home she has stayed in has called her the perfect house guest, and yet she keeps being passed over again and again.

Maggie's future family can expect a calm, sweet, and deeply grateful girl who has already proven she thrives in a home environment. Her hair loss does not affect her health or her happiness, it is simply a reminder of what she’s been through. Maggie simply deserves a calm, settled home where she can finally stop moving around and be loved.

We had a group from Embark come for a volunteer day at QAS! They were an amazing help to us and also brought us 2 DNA tests for our pups. Many thanks to Embark for helping out.

Meet Bradley, a medium-sized, neutered, and fully vaccinated boy estimated to be somewhere between three and eight years old. Bradley is quiet, affectionate, and one of those rare dogs who is equally happy playing with toys as he is melting into a lap for a long cuddle session. Bradley loves belly rubs, being brushed and does not chew furniture. He wants nothing more than to be wherever his people are, and he has a way of making everyone around him feel completely at ease.

Bradley's future family can expect a companion who thrives in a quiet, settled environment where he can feel truly safe. He can be anxious on busy streets, so a calmer neighborhood suits him well. He has coexisted peacefully with a cat from a distance and would do beautifully alongside a dog who shares his preference for a relaxed, low-key dynamic. He is not motivated by human food unless chicken, cheese, or hot dogs are involved. For the right quiet household, he will be an absolute treasure.

When we launched Long Stay, No Longer, we set out to answer a simple question: could DNA insights help the most overlooked shelter dogs finally find homes?

The answer is yes.

Half of the dogs in our program found homes within just ten weeks of receiving their DNA results — after spending an average of 1.5 years in shelter or rescue care. When adopters know a dog's breed mix, health risks, and unique traits, they can picture life together and say yes with confidence.
