Make a new friend this weekend 🐤

Aussie Aviary is swarming with colorful budgies, where feeding the animals is actually encouraged! Purchase seeds from our booth and hold out your hand for an up-close look at these small parrots.

Please note: the Aviary will only be open weekends after Labor Day.

Exercise, a healthy diet and hours upon hours of doting care—that's what it takes to raise a kori bustard chick behind the scenes at Franklin Park Zoo.

Meet our month-old kori bustard chick! She hatched on August 1, the first successful hatch here since 2003. She is being raised by the Animal Care team to ensure she has the best opportunity to thrive—and thriving she is!

This peppy gal is gaining weight daily and growing her little personality. She readily follows her keepers during exercise bouts. She makes it known what foods she likes (banana, yes please!) and foods she doesn't like (green beans, no thank you). Our animal care team painstakingly hand feeds each nutritious morsels to make sure she continues to grow. She'll grow up to be one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, with some adults weighing more than 40 pounds.

Zoo New England's Animal Care and Veterinary teams work closely together to support the health and well-being of the animals at our zoos. In addition to regular check-ups with the veterinarians, our keepers monitor each animal every day for subtle changes in behavior and body condition.

During recent routine check-ups for our elderly Black Welsh mountain sheep, the Children's Zoo Animal Care team brushed up on their body-condition monitoring techniques. Rather than relying on simply tracking their weight on the scale, a hands-on approach to determining the body composition of our animals allows a more detailed evaluation of their overall health. This means the animal care staff can alert the medical team early if they notice any concerning changes. Our aging population is receiving a specialized diet to ensure they stay active and healthy.

We're happy to share that our old ladies are doing well, so be sure to pop in to see them behind the carousel during your next visit!

One of these things is not like the other...

As you can see, African penguin Cooper is going through his catastrophic molt right now. That means he's losing all his feathers and growing a brand-new waterproof set. This process takes a few weeks, and he'll be looking a little plump and scruffy while hanging out on land during that time. But he'll be back to normal swimming with the rest of the colony soon!

You know how sometimes it's the box that's better than the gift inside? Yeah, like that.

Alexander Camelton and Zowie got some delicious hay inside a paper bag recently. But obviously the bag was the best part.

Three perfect little fluffs are waddling behind the scenes at Franklin Park Zoo right now. Meet the red-breasted goose chicks that hatched earlier this month! They are not only adorable, they represent a critical addition to the AZA’s Species Survival Plan.

Red-breasted geese are native to freshwater wetlands in northern Siberia. Their population is listed as vulnerable due to threats including habitat loss, climate change and hunting. Zoo New England participates in the Red-Breasted Goose Species Survival Plan to maintain a genetically healthy population of this species in human care, which could one day support wild populations if needed.

The trio has graduated from an incubator to a larger space behind the scenes. We’re happy to share that the gosling are healthy and have been hitting all of their developmental and adorable milestones. Hope you like baby pictures!
