❤️‍🩹🙏🏼
Please don’t demonize us.
We are shy beautiful and very smart sensitive beings.
We are Virginia Opossum, the only marsupial in the US.
Though our large angular jaws have many teeth, as babies, we have requirements that would confuse most chemistry professors.
We are fragile and helpless if we are found in the pouch of or nearby a deceased mother, or orphaned and separated.
I was found alone, for days with no mom, and no wildlife centers open.

I was in an animal control van when waved her down, stopped to ask if the officer needed help.
I am weak and fighting.
Please send me hope.

🧸🍼🐿️🌤️❤️
Happy Monday from Jermaine!
Sweet boy needs some space to learn to climb, forage, and recover.
We start with the “soft landing” and will gradually get more wild to ready him for outdoor adventures.
💦🌱🪾🍄‍🟫🌳
We are still hoping for a friend soon, but till then, he can lean on me.

Yes! Baby squirrels in June!
Poor little Jermaine was orphaned, but found the right people to follow… They kept him safe and didn’t mind that he was packed with fleas… They still kept him warm and got him to me… Looking desperately for siblings or a nest. We hope to get him buddies by the end of Thursday from a colleague..
In 80s and more the 90’s when I started to care for instantly orphaned squirrels in the Boston, on my way to work to my Animal “feline“ themed boutique, or when I got home, i the Public Garden, Boston Commons… mall on Commonwealth Avenue, etc. we would have explosions of newborn squirrels & birds in the spring & fall.

Now with global warming, (and yes, that is real, ask the Wildlife!), animals would have spring and fall babies accordingly, but since the weather has changed, what is available regarding food and their bodies adaptation to what is available for habitat and or the destruction of, we see births around the calendar year… It is extremely challenging for them and for rappers because we count on those down times that are getting smaller and smaller… So here we go… Birds, raccoons, squirrels, bunnies all at once and plenty more… Baby dear this morning needing state biologist permission to be transported… It is high season now which used to be April

“Meaaah.. What’s Up Doc??”
🥕🐇
Truth/mystery/science of “rabbit
Starting at the top, instantly:
Rabbits chewing fibrous plants grinding them over 100-120 in 1 minute, mixing food w/saliva.
-mixture travels passes through esophagus into super acidic stomach. Rabbit stomachs having a super tight seal, cannot vomit.
-A holding reservoir, the stomach over time short bursts food into the sm intestine, where digestive enzymes & bile break it down.
-Sm intestine absorbs most vitamins, proteins, fats, simple carbs.
What plant stuffs can’t be digested goes to ‘hindgut’, (the cecum and colon).
The unique rabbit colon sorts 2 more steps.
-Undigested fibers pushes out normal, hard f***l pellets, and a second, then a nutrient rich soft matter directed into the magical , where fermentation is key.
Her/his cecum is a large, pouch housing a precious delicate balance of yeast microbes, & bacteria.
The ‘fiber’ & microbes ferment a few hours to break down further into fatty acids, amino acids, & vital vitamins.
finally, the fermented mixture in the cecum is released as ‘cecotropes’, soft, slimy, smelly, grape-like cluster pellets.
Eating these whole instinctivel, yup, right from their a**s (often at night). The slimy mucus protects the nutrients from the acids stomach, and absorbed a 2nd time in the small intestine.
Whew! A lot of work to digest mostly clover, flowers, wood, & grasses & other plants goodness
