Sticks may seem harmless, but they can cause serious injuries.

Miller came to us after a piece of stick became lodged across the roof of his mouth, wedged tightly between his molars. What looked like an ordinary stick turned into a painful problem that required sedation for removal.

Sticks can splinter, become stuck in the mouth or throat, puncture delicate tissues, and even lead to serious infections. If your dog suddenly stops eating, paws at their mouth, drools excessively, or seems uncomfortable after chewing on sticks, it’s important to have them examined.

We know many dogs love carrying and chewing sticks, but safer chew toys can help prevent an unexpected trip to the ER. 🐾

Story time! This little warrior is Willow. ❤️🐾

Willow recently went home after spending seven days in the hospital fighting parvovirus.

When she first arrived at Valor, she was very sick. Over the course of her hospitalization, Willow received intensive supportive care aimed at supporting her body while it fought the virus. In addition to the parvo monoclonal antibody treatment, she required multiple medications, nutritional support through a feeding tube, and around-the-clock monitoring. There were moments when her prognosis was uncertain, and she came dangerously close to losing her battle.

But Willow kept fighting, and so did her family.

A few days after going home, we received these wonderful update photos, and with their permission, we’re excited to share that she is back where she belongs, happy and doing great. You may notice that Willow is still a bit thin in these photos. Puppies with parvovirus often lose a significant amount of weight during their illness because of severe vomiting, diarrhea, and the difficulty of maintaining adequate nutrition. While Willow still has some recovering to do, we are happy with the progress she has made and expect her strength and weight to continue improving at home.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that primarily affects puppies and unvaccinated dogs. It attacks the intestinal tract and immune system, causing severe vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and weakness.

There is no cure for parvovirus itself, treatment focuses on supporting puppies through the infection while their immune system fights the virus. The earlier treatment is started, the better their chances of recovery.

The good news is that parvo is largely preventable.

The best protection is keeping puppies up to date on their vaccines and avoiding high-risk areas until their vaccine series is complete. Puppies are especially vulnerable, and even brief exposure to contaminated environments can put them at risk.

Willow’s story is a reminder of both how serious parvo can be and how resilient these little patients are. We’re so grateful to her family for trusting us with her care and for sharing this happy update. Our staff became quite attached to this sweet little face during her stay with us.

Many of you know Ellen as Astrid’s mom, and her kindness continues to touch our hearts. We are so grateful that she thought of our team, especially on a holiday when many of us are away from our own families while caring for pets in need.

And a special shoutout to our buddy Nuke over at 98 Rocks for bringing us Buttercups cupcakes, they were such a sweet surprise and truly appreciated!

Your generosity, support, and friendship mean more than words can say. Thank you for helping make our Independence Day a little brighter. 🐾

As we gather with family and friends this Memorial Day, we also remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. ❤️🤍💙

While enjoying the holiday, don’t forget to keep your pets safe too:

🐾 Keep pets away from alcohol, greasy foods, bones, onions, conrn on the cob, grapes, and desserts containing xylitol
🐾 Secure trash cans, BBQ leftovers can cause dangerous stomach issues and foreign bodies
🐾 Make sure pets have plenty of fresh water and shade if spending time outdoors
🐾 Never leave pets unattended near pools, lakes, or grills
🐾 Ensure collars and ID tags are up to date in case pets become startled and run off

We are so grateful for each of them—not just this week, but every single day. 💙

Meet Demi—

Being a receptionist at an emergency animal hospital means so much to Demi because she deeply understands the bond people share with their pets. Growing up, animals were her comfort and safe place, creating a connection that has stayed with her throughout her life.

Because of that, she truly relates to the fear and worry clients feel when something is wrong. She knows these pets are family, never “just animals.” Demi takes pride in being the first person to offer comfort and reassurance, helping clients feel less alone during incredibly stressful moments.

She makes it a priority to ensure every client feels heard, supported, and included in their pet’s care. For Demi, knowing she can bring even a small sense of calm while someone’s beloved pet is being treated is what makes this role so meaningful. 💙

Meet Danielle—

For Danielle, being a veterinary receptionist is all about helping pets receive the best care possible while also supporting their families through difficult moments. She takes pride in working with clients to find options that fit their needs, making sure both pets and their people feel cared for every step of the way.

One of her favorite parts of the job is hearing how much kindness and compassion clients experience from the team, especially during some of the most stressful times their families face.

Danielle is grateful to be there when it matters most, offering empathy, patience, and understanding. Because at the end of the day, everyone shares the same goal: helping each pet feel comfortable, cared for, and surrounded by love until they can continue their care with their primary veterinarian.

Meet Shy—

For Shy, one of the most meaningful parts of being an emergency veterinary receptionist is being the calm, steady voice when everything feels chaotic. When clients walk in scared or overwhelmed, she helps ground them, making sure they feel heard, understood, and gently guided through what’s happening with their pet.

She sees her role as the bridge between panic and clarity, helping bring a sense of calm in some of life’s most stressful moments.

And for Shy, helping doesn’t always mean fixing something, it often means simply being present. Sitting with someone who is scared or grieving, offering comfort, patience, and respect to both the client and their pet.

In honor of Veterinary Receptionist Week, we’re continuing to spotlight the amazing individuals who make up our front desk team. These are the people who hold it all together—guiding clients through stressful moments, offering reassurance, and showing up with compassion every single day. 💙

Meet Nerissa—

Nerissa has been in veterinary medicine for 16 years, and she truly can’t imagine doing anything else. Her love for animals started early, finding comfort, companionship, and peace in them during a difficult childhood. Whether it was walking neighbors’ dogs or trying to befriend every stray cat she came across, animals gave her a sense of connection and helped her find her voice.

That passion led her to volunteer at her local humane society in college, which eventually turned into a career, starting in kennel work and growing into the front desk, where she’s been ever since. As an emergency veterinary receptionist, Nerissa gets to do exactly what she set out to do: give animals a voice while supporting their owners through some of their most difficult moments.

No matter the case or the outcome, she finds purpose and meaning in being there when it matters most, and that’s exactly where she’s meant to be. ❤️
