In the year since a school shooting shook their community, two very special dogs have been helping students at Evergreen High School in Colorado find comfort, one gentle nuzzle at a time. Now, the school has found a special way to thank them. ❤️

Polenta and Norene were crowned the school’s first-ever canine homecoming king and queen during Friday night’s homecoming football game. Students created a special court to honor the two therapy dogs, who have become beloved members of the school community.

Their jobs might sound simple, but their impact is anything but. They spend their days in the counseling office, wandering the hallways and hanging out near the school entrance, ready to offer a little comfort to anyone who needs it.

“Their duty is to lie there and just be pet and hang out,” lead counselor Amy Wells explained to Local12 News.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what someone needs.

One year after a student opened fire inside the school, students and staff are still working through the trauma. For many, spending a few minutes with Polenta or Norene offers a welcome break from the weight of the day.

Senior Jackson Thomas said his mood instantly lifts whenever he sees the dogs, noting that he lights up whenever he sees them.

Senior Quinn McEvers appreciates that the dogs offer comfort without expecting anyone to explain how they’re feeling or find the right words.

“You can just get the love from the dogs, and it really helps,” McEvers said.

Whether they’re keeping students company between classes, offering reassurance before a test or simply lying nearby for a much-needed cuddle, Polenta and Norene have become an important part of the healing process.

Their homecoming crowns were more than a fun surprise. They were a heartfelt recognition of two dogs who have helped bring warmth, connection and a little happiness back to a community that has endured so much.

For students at the school the dogs aren't just dogs, they are a part of the community.

And now, these two good dogs have the crowns to prove it. 👑🐾

🚨 TROOPER SHOOTS AND KILLS TWO TRAINED DOGS - OWNER DEFIES COURT ORDER AND RELEASES VIDEO 🚨

This one is going to p**s some people off.

A North Carolina dog trainer has publicly released video showing the moments surrounding the deaths of her two highly trained dogs, Bonnie and Clyde, after a state trooper shot and killed them.

And she did it despite a court order restricting the public release of the recordings.

According to WRAL, Lydia Nikac discovered someone breaking into her car outside her home. She called her dogs to help corral the man and called police.

Trooper Justin Maness arrived and found Bonnie and Clyde circling the man accused of breaking into her car.

The dashcam footage reportedly captures Maness warning:

"Don't move. If the dog comes over here, I'm going to shoot it."

As the trooper moved toward Nikac's property, Clyde approached him.

Maness then opened fire, killing both dogs.

The actual shooting happens outside the dashcam's view.

Nikac says Clyde did not charge the trooper. She says he simply trotted toward him because he was curious.

The dogs weren't just pets.

Bonnie and Clyde were demonstration dogs for Nikac's K-9 training business and reportedly had training and certifications involving therapy work, search and rescue, and apprehension.

The North Carolina State Highway Troopers Association has described the shooting as justified self-defense.

Now here's where this gets even more interesting.

Nikac appealed a lower court ruling restricting her ability to publicly release the recordings.

This week, the North Carolina Court of Appeals upheld that restriction.

The court order prohibits public distribution of the videos without further court authorization.

Nikac posted them anyway.

She told WRAL she's expecting the possibility of being arrested for releasing them.

Her argument?

She says the restrictions have made it harder for her to show the public what happened, gain support and raise money for an attorney.

The trooper's side says the shooting was justified self-defense.

WRAL reached out to the State Highway Patrol for comment on Nikac's decision to publish the videos but had not received a response at the time of its report.

This story is still developing, and Nikac says she plans to continue fighting the court ruling.
