The Science of Deep Pressure: How the Cavalier's Weight Supports Sensory Regulation in Oregon Families.
For families navigating ASD or SPD in the Pacific Northwest, a therapy-bred Cavalier King Charles Spaniel extends beyond companionship into tactile neurobiology: specifically, Deep Pressure Therapy (DPT).
DPT involves gentle, distributed weight that stimulates the proprioceptive system. A mature Cavalier (13–18 lbs) provides the ideal localized pressure for a child’s lap or chest. This mechanical stimulation triggers a shift from the sympathetic 'fight or flight' response to the parasympathetic 'rest and digest' state.
In our Boring, Oregon program, we breed for temperaments that gravitate toward 'lap-work.' This allows the dog to act as a sensory tool, helping to mitigate meltdowns and lower physiological arousal during high-stress transitions common in our active PNW lifestyle.
