This sweet old soul is Sirius.
He’s a 16 year old cattle dog with the softest fur and a fluffy, raccoon striped tail that still swishes with personality. On March 11th, he’ll turn 17, a remarkable milestone for a boy who’s lived a full and faithful life. He’s deaf now and about 90% blind and his arthritis gives him a little sideways swagger when he walks as if he still owns the room.
In December, his beloved human momma passed away. Since then, he’s been cared for by his lifelong veterinary family Eastside Animal Clinic. Last Tuesday, I brought him home with me for what will be his final season; a season I hope is wrapped in peace, gentleness, and deep, steady love until the day he’s reunited with his momma again.
I lost my dad and my own dog last fall, so in many ways, Sirius and I found each other at the right time. We’re both learning to navigate a world that feels new and a little scary. Maybe we’re helping each other feel a little less alone.
