Show us your rescues! 😁
Did you know that most of the animals in our care are rescues or owner surrenders?
They may not all always look exactly perfect, but they’re perfect for us. They are very loved & under expert veterinary care here in their forever home. ❤️

It's less than two weeks away! Come to the Shawano High School on Saturday, January 11th between 12-3pm for an ✨ Exotic Pet Surrender Event!✨

J&R Aquatic Animal Rescue and WAMSCO are teaming up to hold this event for anyone who can no longer take care of their exotic pet. If you or someone you know can no longer take care of their fish, reptile, bird, small mammal, invertebrate, or even plants, we'll take them in!🐟

Please like and share to spread the word about this event!👍

Note that this event will take place in the Agriculture Wing of the high school. Please enter through Door I, as all other doors will be locked.‼

2 Red Kangaroos were born at our Zoo early this year! 🥰
🩵Abraham & 🩷 Sydney
We hand-raise our baby kangaroos as often as we can. Hand-raising & bottle feeding acclimates our kangaroos to human contact & makes future medical care or possible transportation needs much less stressful for them & for us.

Our wonderful kangaroo Mamas are able to raise their own babies in the enclosure, however they are surprisingly indifferent to us picking up the responsibility for them.

On April 8, we began hand-raising Abraham🩵. Zookeeper Andy (& his Mom) & GM/owner Kersten (& family) take turns bringing him home with them each night. Abe is typically at the dealership being spoiled & snuggled all day.🧡 Kangaroo snuggles are just one of the many benefits of being part of the Doc’s crew. 😁
Yesterday we began the process of reintroducing Abe into the enclosure. He got to hop around & interact with Mama Rosie & Auntie Sapphire. All went well & soon Abe will be fully reintegrated into the enclosure & neutered (✂️ sorry buddy but it’s what’s best). 😁
Stop by for a visit & tell our Roos you saw them on Facebook. 💙👍

Ralphie, our 11 year old Crested Porcupine. 💚
Ralphie is looking forward to getting back into his outdoor enclosure as soon as the weather is a bit warmer. For now, you can see him in the red barn.
Crested porcupine fun facts;
⭐️ Porcupines do NOT shoot their quills.
⭐️ Crested Porcupine’s sharp quills are on their backside & their quills have no barbs. When threatened they will rattle their quills & back into their perceived threat.
⭐️ They are rodents & their teeth continue to grow throughout their lives. We give Ralphie branches and bones to chew on to keep his teeth healthy.
⭐️ They are native to Italy & parts of Africa.
⭐️ They can live up to 28 years which is the second longest lifespan of any rodent.

Our little leopard gecko friend, Spot, wants to show all of you her new, stylish hoodie! It’s actually a layer of dead skin that she sheds when she grows. Leopard geckos will continue to do this process throughout the course of their whole lives and is a sign of a healthy, happy animal. Usually, the gecko will remove and eat its own skin to reabsorb the extra nutrients. Other times, they require a little bit of extra help with the removal. It may be a little strange, but Spot sure is cute! 🦎❤️

Out of all the wonderful parrots that call our zoo “home,” Hungry, our yellow-headed Amazon parrot, is DEFINITELY the most likely to have a conversation with you! Our other birds tend to be a bit more shy when sharing their vocabulary, but Hungry is quite happy to show off! Phrases like “hello,” “how are you”, “arriba!”, and “Polly wanna cracker” are a great way to get him in a chit-chatting mood. Come see him all winter long in our critter room along with all his other feathered friends! 🦜🪶🦜

🐢❄️ Nothing like a warm indoor swim on a frigid November day! ❄️🐢

This is Tiny, our smallest (and spunkiest) box turtle. He’s got quite an attitude, so he lives separate from our other box turtles in a suite all his own. He enjoys fresh crickets, cozy naps, and a nice soak in a hot tub at the end of a long day. Tiny can be found in our Critter Room, lounging away in his water dish until someone brings him a delicious snack. He’s just such a cutie! 🥰
