REISHI MUSHROOM — GROWN IN-HOUSE AT BOISE MUSHROOM COMPANY

Reishi (Ganoderma species) is one of the most recognizable functional mushrooms in the world. With its glossy reddish-brown surface and woody texture, Reishi looks very different from the gourmet mushrooms you might cook for dinner.

And yes—we grow Reishi right here in-house at Boise Mushroom Company.

Because mature Reishi is tough and woody, it generally isn’t sautéed and eaten like Oyster, Shiitake, or Lion’s Mane. Instead, Reishi has a long history of traditional use in teas, decoctions, powders, extracts, and tinctures.

At Boise Mushroom Company, you can find Reishi in several different products:

Reishi Tincture
Our small-batch Reishi tincture is made in-house and offers a convenient way to add Reishi to your mushroom routine.

Dried Reishi
We also offer dried Reishi for customers who prefer traditional preparations or want to make their own teas, decoctions, or extracts.

Daily Five Mushroom Blend Tincture
Reishi is one of the mushrooms in our Daily Five blend, along with Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, and Turkey Tail.

Mushroom Coffee
You can even find Reishi in our in-house mushroom coffee. It combines coffee with a blend of functional mushrooms for an easy way to enjoy mushrooms as part of your morning routine.

Reishi naturally contains fungal compounds such as beta-glucans and triterpenes. Researchers continue to investigate Reishi and the unique chemistry found within this fascinating mushroom.

From growing Reishi to drying it and incorporating it into our small-batch products, we love being involved in the process right here at Boise Mushroom Company.

Stop by the shop and check out our Reishi products, or ask us about the different ways you can use this unique mushroom.

Turkey Tail Mushroom — Available at Boise Mushroom Company

Looking to add Turkey Tail to your mushroom routine? Boise Mushroom Company carries Turkey Tail in two convenient forms: our small-batch Turkey Tail tincture and dried Turkey Tail mushroom.

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) is a beautiful, naturally banded mushroom named for its resemblance to a wild turkey’s tail. Because the mushroom itself is tough and woody, it isn’t typically prepared like Oyster, Lion’s Mane, or Shiitake mushrooms. Instead, Turkey Tail has traditionally been prepared as teas, powders, and extracts.

Turkey Tail naturally contains beta-glucans and other mushroom polysaccharides, which are among the compounds that have made this species an ongoing subject of scientific research.

Turkey Tail Tincture

Our Turkey Tail tincture offers an easy way to incorporate Turkey Tail into your daily routine. Each bottle is made in-house in small batches at Boise Mushroom Company.

Dried Turkey Tail

Prefer making your own preparations? We also carry dried Turkey Tail. It’s a great option for customers interested in making mushroom tea, decoctions, or their own extracts at home.

Whether you're already familiar with Turkey Tail or you're just beginning to explore functional mushrooms, stop by and we'll be happy to help you choose the option that works best for you.

FUNGI FACT: Not All Fungi Live the Same Way

When we think about fungi, we often think about mushrooms popping out of the ground or growing on a fallen log. But what's happening underneath that mushroom can be much more interesting.

Fungi use several different strategies to survive. Three of the most important are saprotrophic, mycorrhizal, and parasitic.

SAPROTROPHIC FUNGI — THE RECYCLERS

Saprotrophic fungi feed on dead organic material such as fallen trees, leaves, wood, and other plant matter.

They release enzymes that break complex material down outside their bodies and then absorb the available nutrients. In the process, nutrients locked inside dead material are returned to the ecosystem.

Many familiar cultivated mushrooms are saprotrophic. Oyster mushrooms, Lion's Mane, Shiitake, and many other gourmet species fall into this general category. It's also why we can grow many of these mushrooms on hardwood sawdust, straw, and other plant-based substrates.

Think of saprotrophic fungi as some of nature's recyclers.

MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI — THE PARTNERS

Mycorrhizal fungi form relationships with the roots of living plants.

The fungus extends a network of microscopic hyphae through the surrounding soil. This network can help the plant access water and nutrients, particularly phosphorus and other minerals. In return, the plant supplies the fungus with carbon compounds produced through photosynthesis.

Many prized wild mushrooms are mycorrhizal, including chanterelles, porcini, and many truffles.

This relationship is also one reason some wild mushrooms are extremely difficult to cultivate commercially. You aren't simply growing a mushroom—you may need the right living tree, fungus, soil, climate, and environmental conditions working together.

PARASITIC FUNGI — THE OPPORTUNISTS

Parasitic fungi obtain nutrients from living organisms.

Their hosts can include plants, insects, animals, and even other fungi. Some parasites eventually kill their hosts, while others can persist alongside them for extended periods.

One fascinating example is Cordyceps and related fungi, which include species that parasitize insects and other arthropods. Other parasitic fungi attack trees or even other mushrooms.

And fungi don't always fit perfectly into one category. Some species can change strategies depending on their environment or the stage of their life cycle.

That's part of what makes mycology so fascinating.

The mushroom we see is only the reproductive structure. Much of the organism exists as mycelium hidden inside wood, soil, or another substrate.

Next time you're hiking or foraging and find a mushroom, take a closer look at where it's growing. Is it growing from dead wood? Near the roots of a particular tree? On another living organism?

Those clues can tell you a lot about how that fungus makes its living.

SMALL BATCH. MADE IN-HOUSE. BOISE MUSHROOM COMPANY TINCTURES.

Did you know Boise Mushroom Company makes our own line of mushroom tinctures right here in-house?

From mushroom to finished bottle, we're proud to be directly involved in the process. Our tinctures are produced in small batches using a dual-extraction process, combining water and alcohol extraction before being bottled and labeled in-house.

Our current tincture lineup includes:

• Lion's Mane
• Reishi
• Cordyceps
• Chaga
• Turkey Tail
• Daily Five Blend — Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Chaga and Turkey Tail together in one bottle

Why dual extraction?

Mushrooms contain different naturally occurring compounds, and those compounds don't all extract the same way. Water and alcohol have different extraction properties, so our process uses both rather than relying on a single extraction method.

We believe customers should know where their mushroom products come from and how they're made. That's one of the reasons we enjoy producing our tinctures ourselves instead of simply putting the Boise Mushroom Company name on someone else's finished product.

If you've been curious about mushroom tinctures, stop by the shop, see our complete lineup and talk mushrooms with us.
