Summer vacation is right around the corner! For pet parents who use pet sitters or have someone caring for their pets while away, we recommend having a medical authorization form on file with your primary veterinarian and leaving a copy with your pet sitter as well.
If your pet requires emergency medical attention after hours, especially at a veterinary hospital other than your regular clinic, these forms can help authorize treatment if you are unable to be reached right away.
Helpful information to include:

- Your contact information
- Emergency contact(s)
- Your primary veterinarian
- Preferred emergency hospital and CPR directive
- Current medications or medical conditions
- An approved treatment/spending limit

Preparing ahead of time can help prevent delays in care and ensure your pet receives medical attention as quickly as possible! We encourage all pet owners to speak with their veterinarian about obtaining and completing a medical authorization form before it’s ever needed.

Say hello to another incredible member of our team, Dr. Sutherland! As one of our talented veterinarians, Dr. Sutherland plays a vital role in caring for our patients at Boise Cat Clinic. 🐾

How long have you been working at BCC?
“I have been at Boise Cat Clinic since August, 2024. This is my first time working at a feline exclusive practice after spending a few years working with dogs, cats, and other small mammals.”

Why did you choose to work at a cat-only clinic?
“Cats are historically brought to the vet less often than dogs, so general practice veterinarians don't get to work with as many cats. I love all animals, but after I adopted my first cat Franklin, I very quickly became a cat person. I wanted to commit to working with this lesser understood species with a team that is as passionate about feline medicine as I am.”

What is your favorite part about working at BCC?
“I love working with an expert team of cat people! We are committed to making our patients' time here as minimally stressful as possible. I also really enjoy working with our client base, since they are also committed to the very best for their cats.”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
“I love to spend time outdoors hiking, camping, or walking the green belt! I'm a big fan of reading and spending time in the kitchen making delicious vegan food. My fiancée and I also love to explore around the state of Idaho and beyond.”

Meet the team! We’re proud to introduce the wonderful individuals who make our work possible. They truly are the heart of everything we do. To kick things off, meet Dr. Irwin, the proud owner of Boise Cat Clinic and one of our wonderful veterinarians! 🐾

How long have you been working at Boise Cat Clinic?
“I joined the Boise Cat Clinic team in May of 2018. I grew under the mentorship of Dr. Robin Roller, whom I purchased the practice from in January of 2024.”

Why did you choose to work at a cat-only clinic?
“I have always loved cats. I grew up on a farm in eastern Idaho, and while my siblings were out riding horses, I was busy befriending the feral barn cats and kittens and sneaking them into the house while my dad wasn't looking. Earning a cat’s love and trust is incredibly rewarding.

I love working at a cat-only clinic because cats have such unique medical and behavioral needs, and practicing feline-specific medicine is the best way to focus care on those needs. I love that each cat has unique idiosyncrasies, yet all are perfectly cat-like. I enjoy being surrounded with fellow “cat people” who appreciate what makes cats so special - our team and our clients.”

What is your favorite part about working at Boise Cat Clinic?
“My favorite part of my job is celebrating the unique bond between each cat and person and the challenge that comes with tailoring care to meet the specific needs of each cat individual and the family as a whole. I also take a lot of pride in our practice being privately owned because it means we have the autonomy to practice the way we see fit, in the best interested of our patients and clients.”

What is your favorite ‘type’ of cat?
“My favorite 'type' of cat is tortoiseshells with their endearing ‘tortitude.’”

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
“Outside of work, I enjoy gardening and yard work in the summer and knitting, sewing, and other fiber crafts in the winter. I also love spending time outdoors hiking, kayaking, and biking with my husband, Ross.”

Happy Halloween from Boise Cat Clinic! Halloween can be fun for us, but it can be stressful and even dangerous for our feline friends. Here are a few important ways to keep your cat safe this spooky season:

🚪 Keep cats away from the door – With constant doorbell ringing and visitors in costumes, it’s easy for cats to become frightened or try to slip outside. Set them up in a quiet, secure room away from the activity to help them stay calm.

🍫 No Halloween treats for cats – Candy, chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free sweets), and raisins are toxic to cats. Keep all treats safely stored, and call a clinic or the ASPCA Poison Control Center immediately if your cat ingests something suspicious.

🐈‍⬛ Keep outdoor cats indoors – Increased activity and pranks around Halloween can make it unsafe for cats to roam. Keep them inside for a few days before and after the holiday for their protection.

✨ Be mindful of toxic decorations – Glow sticks, candles, fake cobwebs, and potpourri can be harmful if chewed or ingested. Keep these items out of reach.

💊 Ask us about stress-free options – If your cat becomes anxious during holidays or loud events, call us to discuss additional calming measures or medication options to help them stay relaxed and comfortable.

A few weeks ago, several members of our team, including our veterinarians, attended the 2025 Feline Veterinary Medical Association Conference in Portland, Oregon. They spent the weekend celebrating feline medicine, connecting with fellow professionals, and engaging in an inspiring educational experience. From incredible speakers to shared learning and great company, it’s safe to say they enjoyed a fun and knowledge-filled weekend! 🐈🎉✨
