We are in the throws of adolescence with him but Oak showed up and showed well this past weekend at the UKC Fallon Nevada show! Looking back I wish I had snagged a podium photo of him but he’s in that “ put him in the closet and don’t look until he’s mature” stage 😅 and I’ll try again this weekend at our AKC show.

Despite his teenage boy brain throwing us through some loops due to the girls being in season, he tried his very best and managed to land first in class in all four shows, and best male twice! He brought home his first UKC flat ribbons and 30 points towards his championship- Go Oak!

Overall very proud of this little guy, the sky’s the limit for him and I have no doubt he’ll mature into a stunning dude in a few short months. The gangly teen phase shall soon pass 🥲

Haven KILLED IT this past weekend at the Fallon Nevada UKC show! 2 days, 4 shows, and another 60 points towards Champion!

Very proud of this gorgeous girl who has matured so nicely in the past year. It was our first time in the best of show ring up against some beautiful dogs and their handlers. All in all, Haven landed:
First in her class x4
Best female x3
Winners x 3
1st in Gun Dog Group x2
3rd in Gun Dog Group x1

As a newbie to the world of dog shows, my favorite thing about showing in UKC is how welcoming and encouraging the community is 🤍

We had the pleasure of showing under some incredibly kind, encouraging, and helpful judges who make stepping into the ring feel fun and educational rather than stressful. I especially appreciate judges who take the time to help new handlers, offer thoughtful feedback, and create a positive atmosphere for both new and experienced exhibitors. Special thanks to the wonderfully kind and positive judges we showed under this weekend, Katherine Short, Sandra Phillips, Susan Nikkel and Judith Lehman. Dog shows should be enjoyable, and judges like these are a wonderful reminder of what the sport is really about.

And of course, I can’t go without thanking my friends as well, this lovely group of ladies who supported one another, were uplifting , encouraging and helpful with one another through the ups and downs of a very busy weekend! “ I have a high drive dog”- but do you really?

This is something I don’t see talked about often but it’s a valuable subject to touch on, especially in the golden world where the breed is split( a post for another day).

I hear a lot of “ this is a high drive dog,” but sometimes what you’re actually seeing is arousal- not drive! Understanding the difference can completely change how you train, raise, and work with the dog in front of you. It has certainly influenced my breeding decisions!

DRIVE is a dog’s motivation to pursue a specific goal : get the bird, the ball, the disc etc. A dog with strong drive may have intense motivation and grit to retrieve, hunt, chase, work for food, engage with a handler, search for scent, or complete a task. Drive has a clear direction and purpose. A high-drive dog can absolutely be excited, but good working drive often comes with more of a thought process while working, the ability to solve a problem with a level head.

AROUSAL on the other hand, is the dog’s level of physiological and emotional activation. A dog with high arousal can look like:
• Frantic movement
• Barking or screaming, whining etc
• Jumping, spinning or pacing
• Difficulty taking food when amped up
• Losing previously learned behaviors
• Mouthiness or excessive nipping
• Fixating on other dogs or stimuli
• Being unable to settle after excitement
A dog can be highly aroused without actually having much drive at all, or both can true in the same dog- high drive, high arousal.

The dogs I personally love working with are dogs with a decent amount of drive coupled with a solid “ off-switch,” my other favorite trait!
That ability to regulate arousal without losing drive is something I seek out and select for in my dogs and something that will dictate a lot of my breeding decisions going forward, it’s also the reason behind many difficult washes and hard decisions!

A well rounded, versatile family dog shouldn’t be a dog with high arousal and it sucks to notice that in your dogs and make the decision to end lines and wash dogs- but in the end, it’s necessary for the betterment of the breed as a whole ❤️

Maui x Maeve - anticipated Spring-Summer 2027!

✨Note that this litter is 100% contingent on Maeve’s final health testing ✨

🏝️I’m super excited about this breeding, not only is Maeve my first bred by dog, but she’s also my first dog to earn a hunt title and although this litter is a little ways away, I had to share it! I’ll likely be reposting it with an updated ad in the future as we’re not done adding titles to Maeve’s name! I hope to earn her international championship and a certificate of conformation before she’s bred. I’ve also have dreams of more sport titles but we’ll see how this next year plays out- we are going to be buuusy!

⛵️I knew I had to find a special boy for Maeve’s first litter, a biddable dog with correct structure and temperament to compliment her and help add some substance and qualities I’d like to see in pups from her. Maui from Maui and Holly 🦮 is the complete package! Maui is a handsome, beautifully built boy from a lovely multi-talented bench pedigree. He not only works full time as a service dog but crushes it in the ring, being AKC pointed and holding a CH in UKC. He also dabbles in some fun dog sports as well and bonus point-he’s on his way to earning a hunt title too! I would love nothing more than to see Maeve’s line dual titled in both conformation and hunt one day and I think Maui can absolutely help us get there!

☀️Maeve and Maui should produce gorgeous, well-rounded, structurally correct dogs who are biddable, friendly, easy-going, and could go in any direction. We should see dog’s well suited to active families, sport, and service homes with the possibility of show prospects as well.

Announcing our first litter plan of 2027! Tikka x Easy!

Tikka has notoriously long cycles so we expect her to come into season sometime between October and January! She’ll be paired to Easy, a gorgeous boy with a sweet and gentle temperament and correct structure and movement. These puppies should be versatile, well-rounded, goofy, sweet, and up for anything!

SHE DID IT! JH! 🏆

Maeve is back home and is now a Junior Hunter! This accomplishment marks the beginning of our programs journey towards a few goals I’ve had in mind since the start of Mountain Reign. Very proud of my first bred by girl and my first dog to earn a hunting title! What a cool experience for her and I’m stoked to now having an actual little hunting dog! Love this red firecracker, ( that should have been her registered name tbh) we’re not quite done working towards titles and I’m looking forward to adding a few more to her name before she turns 2 in December, but she’s now:
Mountain Reign’s Celtic Queen JH RN FTN CGCA CGCU TKN VHMA!

So much work is put into early crate exposure and training here! Pups are in crates from the moment their eyes open and by the time they leave us, they’ve formed a positive association with the crate. Families often report that crate training is a breeze when they bring their new pups home- it’s not luck but intentional early work!

A great morning to pick up some trash! We joined Idahos adopt a highway program last year and give back to our local community by cleaning up a stretch of our highway! I was surprised by the lack of litter ( yay) and only managed to fill half a bag.
