Yes!

Sometimes the most productive thing your horse can do is nothing at all.

We're so quick to read stillness as a problem to fix — is he bored, is he uncomfortable, is something wrong. But stillness is also where the body actually does its work. Digestion settles. Cortisol comes down. Tissue repairs.

Same goes for you.

If you've been in "do more, fix more, manage more" mode for a while, this is your reminder: rest isn't the thing standing between you and progress. It's part of it.

Jasper, a 6-year-old thoroughbred, arrived at the Virginia Tech Veterinary Teaching Hospital with 52 pounds of gravel packed into his colon, gradually swallowed while he was on pasture rest for a knee injury.

Removing it without rupturing his inflamed colon became a hands-on teaching case for our surgical team: residents Drs. Nadine Altmann and Victoria Whitworth operated under the supervision of Dr. Carla Enriquez, while third-year student Mikayla Hearne scrubbed in and cared for Jasper through his recovery.

Mixed in with all that gravel was one more surprise: a penny dated 1987. 🪙

At the dissection I attended this year the horse was underweight and we did not see this type of tissue much in his body.

Every year I post ugly pictures of excessive adipose tissue accumulated in the nuchal crest, around the croup, or around the abdominal cavity.
And every year, I face the same picture during dissections.
So it is time to repeat the plea.

Please learn to recognise and score both the Body Condition Score (BCS) and the Cresty Neck Score (CNS).
Learn that this amount of adipose tissue is not simply an extra energy store. Excessive fat is a metabolically active tissue that alters numerous biochemical and endocrine pathways throughout the body.
Obese horses are not "cute" or "just good doers." They are at risk of serious health problems, including insulin dysregulation, laminitis, and reduced quality of life.
They need educated help.
But first, they need you to recognise that there is a problem.

Killing with kindness is still killing.

If your PPID equine lives in the Northern Hemisphere, laminitis risk is increasing this time of year. Have you checked your horse's current ACTH? The Northern Hemisphere is currently in the Seasonal Rise, which peaks in late September and ends in late December. Full-blown PPID horses have dramatic (and dangerous) increases in ACTH during the Seasonal Rise -- up to 1,000 or higher. For best control, Dr. Kellon recommends that PPID horses' ACTH stay in the middle of the ACTH test reference range year-round. For more information about the Seasonal Rise, go here: https://www.ecirhorse.org/seasonal-rise.php. For individual help with your PPID and/or EMS/IR equine, please join our free outreach group: https://ecir.groups.io/g/main.

One of my favorite exercises for waking up a horse’s nervous system is Zig Zag Poles. The goal is proprioceptive activity, meaning your horse has to constantly adjust his balance and stride to navigate variable gaps between poles. I call it nervous system training, and it works.

Set up your poles with different widths at each point of the zig zag, and experiment with raising some poles or leaving them flat. There’s no one right way, the variation is the work.

This exercise is one of 55 in my book 55 Corrective Exercises for Horses, available on my website. If you don’t have a copy yet, grab one. Your horse will thank you.
