Colic.
It’s every horse persons dreaded word.
You should always be prepared to deal with it by having Banamine available but also knowing what to do and not to do during the situation is essential.
I still routinely see and hear old myths discussed as if they are law. They aren’t and you can cause more stress by adhering to them.
Here are the most common:

DON’T LET THEM ROLL OR LIE DOWN

Rolling itself doesn’t cause the intestines to twist. It's often the pain from a twist, or a badly distended gut, that makes a horse want to roll.
If pain is bad enough, rolling can include thrashing, so move them to an open area and stand back.

KEEP THEM WALKING
I fully support movement for colics and will often ask them to trot in shorts bursts to move if I suspect gas, but if they need to lie down, roll, or rest by all means let them.

THEY POOPED SO THEY ARE OK!
While passing manure may look like it provides relief, a horse has 50-70 feet of intestinal track. The impaction can be behind already formed f***s. Pooping is a great sign, but not always the end of the situation.

Colic is best managed by knowing your horse’s habits to immediately detect unusual behavior, taking vitals to monitor pain levels, getting pain meds on board and having a good working relationship with an equine vet clinic who can assist you by stepping in if the colic progresses.
