Dental disease isn’t just about bad breath or dirty teeth. It can become painful, infected, and severe enough that saving the teeth is no longer possible.

When tartar and periodontal disease progress below the gumline, bacteria, food debris, and even hair can become trapped around diseased teeth. This can lead to inflamed and infected gums, bone loss, loose teeth, tooth-root disease, abscesses, and significant chronic pain.

At this stage, brushing alone cannot fix the problem. A professional dental procedure under anesthesia is needed to thoroughly clean above and below the gumline, evaluate each tooth, and treat disease. When a tooth and its supporting structures are too badly damaged, extraction may be the only way to eliminate the source of pain and infection.

At the Lois Pope Pet Clinic at Tri-County Animal Rescue, we have dental X-ray capabilities, allowing our veterinary team to see what cannot be seen by simply looking inside the mouth, including the tooth roots and bone below the gumline. That information is critical when determining which teeth can safely remain and which need treatment or removal.

Please don't wait for your pet to stop eating. Many animals continue eating despite significant dental pain. Bad breath, red or bleeding gums, heavy tartar, dropping food, chewing on one side, pawing at the mouth, facial swelling, or suddenly avoiding hard food can all be warning signs.

🦷 Prevention is easier, less painful, and often less expensive than treating advanced dental disease.

The Lois Pope Pet Clinic at Tri-County Animal Rescue is proud to partner with Petco Love for their Vaccinated & Loved campaign, helping provide FREE DAPP vaccines for dogs and FeLV vaccines for cats to pets in our community.

Diseases like parvovirus and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats can be devastating but they are also preventable with proper vaccination.

Petco Love created the Vaccinated & Loved initiative to make sure that cost and access never have to stand between a pet and potentially lifesaving preventive care. Through this partnership, free vaccines are distributed to organizations like ours so we can get them directly to the pets who need them most.

We believe preventive veterinary care should be accessible to every family. These free vaccines allow us to protect more pets, prevent the spread of serious disease, and help keep animals healthy and at home with the people who love them.

Sometimes even the goodest boys and girls make questionable choices. A sock. A toy. A piece of plastic. Something from the trash. We’ve seen it all.

When a dog or cat swallows something they shouldn’t, it can become lodged in the stomach or intestines and cause a foreign body obstruction, a potentially life-threatening emergency.

Signs can include:
• Repeated vomiting or retching
• Suddenly refusing food
• Rapid weight loss
• Abdominal discomfort or bloating
• Lethargy or weakness
• Difficulty passing stool

If an obstruction is suspected, diagnostic imaging such as X-rays or ultrasound may be necessary. In some cases, emergency surgery is the only way to safely remove the foreign object and prevent serious complications.

🛑When the call comes in, you don’t always have time to prepare. You just have to be ready.

Animal Control reached out to us about a French Bulldog who had been found in an AutoZone parking lot, covered in blood and suffering from a devastating injury to his eye. They knew we had the surgeon, Dr. Ramsey and the medical team at the Lois Pope Pet Clinic equipped to handle a case like this.

Could we take him? they asked our Director Suzi. Yes, she of course said.

We named him Stitch, and from the moment he arrived, our team went to work.

The trauma Stitch had endured was severe and his injured eye could not be saved. He was immediately prepared for emergency surgery but before the procedure could even begin, Stitch’s condition began to deteriorate.

Everything stopped.

Bloodwork was run. IV fluids were administered. Our team stabilized him and stayed right beside him until he began regaining his strength.

Then it was time.

The LPPC team went into surgery knowing exactly what was at stake. It felt like forever waiting for those words: “He made it.”

Stitch may have woken up with one less eye, but he also woke up with something far more important, a chance.

Tonight, he is recovering. He is comfortable. He is safe and we he is surrounded by people who fought incredibly hard to get him here.

This is what rescue medicine looks like. It isn’t always pretty. Sometimes there is blood. Sometimes plans change by the minute but when an animal needs us, we are ready.

We are incredibly proud of Dr. Ramsey and the entire Lois Pope Pet Clinic team for giving Stitch the care he needed when every minute mattered.

And Stitch? This little guy is tougher than he knows. One eye down. One very big life ahead. ❤️

Fourth of July Pet Safety Reminder from the Lois Pope Pet Clinic 🇺🇸

While Independence Day is a time of celebration, it is also one of the busiest holidays for veterinary emergencies. Taking a few precautions can help prevent avoidable injuries and illnesses.

Please keep the following in mind:

🔹 Keep pets indoors during fireworks. Loud noises and flashing lights can trigger severe anxiety, panic, and escape behaviors. Provide a secure indoor environment with windows and doors closed. Playing soft music or white noise may help reduce stress.

🔹 Verify identification. Keep collar and ID tag on at all times today. The Fourth of July consistently sees one of the highest rates of lost pets each year.

🔹 Avoid feeding holiday foods. Many popular cookout items can be harmful to pets, including:
• Corn on the cob (can cause life-threatening intestinal obstruction)
• Cooked bones (risk of fractures, choking, and gastrointestinal perforation)
• Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, and foods containing xylitol
• Fatty foods, which may increase the risk of pancreatitis

🔹 Keep fireworks, sparklers, lighter fluid, and charcoal away from pets. These materials can cause burns, trauma, toxicity, and respiratory irritation.

🔹 Watch for signs of heat-related illness. High temperatures and outdoor celebrations can quickly lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Ensure pets always have access to fresh water, shade, and a cool environment.

If your pet experiences vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, collapse, ingestion of a toxic substance, or any other medical emergency, seek veterinary care immediately.
