🐾 Recently, Miami-Dade Animal Services reached out to Tri-County Animal Rescue about a French Bulldog named Sally who desperately needed help. Sally had developed a massive mammary tumor that had grown so large and painful that it required immediate surgical care, something their shelter was not equipped to perform.

Knowing the level of expertise our veterinary team provides, especially our talented surgeon Dr. Ramsey, they asked if we could take her in.

When Sally arrived, it was clear she needed help right away.

According to her medical records, Sally weighed just 26 pounds and was underweight and dehydrated. She had a very large ulcerated mammary mass, along with several smaller nodules on other mammary glands and additional skin masses.

Our veterinary team immediately ran bloodwork and X-rays to make sure she could safely undergo surgery. Once she was cleared, Dr. Ramsey brought her straight into the operating room.

What she removed was shocking.

The tumor alone weighed 2.69 pounds.

For a dog Sally’s size, that means she had been carrying around a tumor that made up more than 10% of her entire body weight.

The surgery was extensive, but it was successful. The tumor and affected tissue were removed, and Sally is now recovering with our team and finally free from the enormous weight and discomfort she had been living with.

Stories like Sally’s are also an important reminder about the importance of spaying your pets.

Mammary tumors are very common in unspayed female dogs and many can become cancerous. Spaying dogs earlier in life can greatly reduce the risk of developing these tumors, and in many cases can prevent them entirely.

Sally’s condition is a heartbreaking example of how serious these tumors can become when they go untreated but it also shows how lifesaving veterinary care can make all the difference.

🩺 • CRITICAL CARE CASE: SANDY 🩺

Sandy was flown to us from Puerto Rico in life-threatening condition after being found with an open, compound fracture of her left front leg, bone visibly protruding through her skin, extensive tissue damage, and road rash consistent with being struck by a vehicle. No medical facility on the island was equipped to manage such a severe orthopedic emergency, so she was transported directly to the Lois Pope Pet Clinic at Tri-County Animal Rescue, where our team believed we could save her leg and give her a chance to recover.

Upon arrival, Sandy was immediately stabilized with pain control, sedation, IV fluids, and lab work. Her diagnostics revealed not only the fracture but also heartworm disease, adding another serious medical challenge to her case. Even in tremendous pain, Sandy remained gentle, trusting, and incredibly brave.

During surgical preparation, a 3–4 cm fragment of her ulna fell out of the wound, demonstrating the severity of the trauma. Our surgeon, Dr. Ramsey, performed a complex orthopedic repair involving a plate and multiple locking and cortical screws to reconstruct and stabilize the radius. The extent of the damage initially made amputation a consideration, but the surgical team was able to preserve the limb through advanced internal fixation.

Sandy is now receiving continuous wound care, bandage management, antibiotics, pain medication, and the first phase of her heartworm treatment. Her recovery will include restricted mobility, repeat imaging, and strict monitoring for healing and infection.

She is walking again, resting comfortably, and showing us every day how resilient animals can be when given a chance. We are proud of our surgical and medical team, and grateful to have the skills and resources to provide advanced emergency care to animals who need it most.

🦷🐾 The Importance of Dental Care for Our Pets

This is Rupert, an 11-year-old sweetheart who was brought to the Lois Pope Pet Clinic for a routine exam. While he looked tired and a bit run-down, his biggest struggle was something we couldn’t see at first glance, he was sneezing constantly and struggling to eat hard food.

After a full exam by our skilled medical team, we discovered the cause: Rupert’s teeth were severely infected, fractured, and filled with advanced dental disease. At his age, surgery was critical to prevent dangerous infection spreading to his heart, liver, and kidneys.

Our veterinary dental team performed a full dental procedure, removing the infected teeth and treating the affected areas. The photos show just how serious his condition was.

🚨 32 Surgeries in One Day, Including a Life-Saving Emergency!

Yesterday was an incredibly busy and emotional day at the Lois Pope Pet Clinic. Our medical team successfully performed 32 surgeries in a single day, one of which was an emergency pyometra on a 5-year-old cat whose life was hanging in the balance.

Pyometra is a severe, rapidly progressing uterine infection that occurs in unspayed female animals. It fills the uterus with pus and toxins, causing the abdomen to swell dramatically and without emergency surgery, it is almost always fatal. Pets with pyometra can go into septic shock, suffer kidney failure, and die within hours if untreated.

Thanks to our skilled surgical team and immediate intervention, this sweet girl survived. ❤️🐾
But many animals do not get this chance.

Tank arrived to us from Miami in critical condition, requiring immediate intervention and ongoing advanced veterinary care. During his eight weeks of intensive medical management, he has undergone multiple complex surgical procedures and demonstrated remarkable recovery progress.

🐾 Tank Update, A New Chapter Begins 🐾

Do you remember Tank? The walrus-shaped, heartbreakingly defeated boy who needed four people and a stretcher just to get inside our doors? The dog whose spirit felt as heavy as his body?

Today, we get to share something beautiful. 💛

Tank has done it (with the help of our caring staff).

He lost 15 pounds! 15 pounds of pain, pressure, and suffering lifted from his body so he could finally take the next step toward healing. And because of that weight loss, he was finally cleared for his FHO surgery at our Lois Pope Pet Clinic.

It went spectacularly as you can see from his X-Ray. 🙏

Yes… it still took three vet techs to carry him. 😅 But this time, it wasn’t sadness holding him up, it was a team lifting him forward.

🩺 What is FHO Surgery?

FHO stands for Femoral Head Ostectomy, a specialized orthopedic surgery where the damaged head of the femur (hip joint) is removed. This eliminates bone-on-bone pain and allows a new, comfortable joint-like structure to form over time.

It’s life-changing for dogs like Tank.

Tiny, trembling, and in pain, this is how little Peanut arrived at the Lois Pope Pet Clinic.

Animal Control brought her to us after a Good Samaritan witnessed something unthinkable: Peanut had fallen out of a bicycle basket… and was then kicked by the person who was supposed to protect her. That witness didn’t hesitate, they scooped up Peanut and got her help.

She arrived limping, scared, and barely weighing a few pounds. Our team immediately performed X-rays and found the cause of her pain, a fractured leg that required surgical repair.

Peanut underwent orthopedic surgery where pins were carefully inserted to stabilize and heal her tiny limb. The procedure was a success, and this brave little pup is already on the road to recovery.

At the Lois Pope Pet Clinic, we don’t just treat injuries, we restore hope. For every Peanut, every broken bone, and every second chance, we are here.
