Earlier this week we asked if your dogs need their teeth brushed?🦷
YES! 💯 Dental chews, bones, or other chews are positive additions to a dental routine BUT do not replace regular brushing.
Like humans, dog’s teeth acquire plaque and bacteria daily build up. Without proper care this can cause periodontal disease, painful tooth loss, and infections. Roughly 80% of dogs are affected by periodontal disease. 😭
Luckily for dogs, their enzymatic tooth paste comes in fun flavors like poultry and peanut butter! 🥜
If your dog is new to or uncomfortable with brushing here’s what we recommend:
☝🏼Use a finger brush and allow your dog to get comfortable sniffing and licking off the toothpaste. Make this fun - no pressure
👄Gently lift their lip exposing their teeth and reward them with a treat or more paste licking
🤍As they get more comfortable, SLOWLY increase to more lip moving, and brush strokes. Small circular motions around the gums is best.
🤗 With all ‘training’ the more fun and rewarding it for your dog, the more likely they are to want to keep doing the ‘thing’ you’re teaching them.
At The Teacher’s Pet we aim not only build confident happy dogs BUT confident happy humans through their relationship with their dog. From basic obedience, to fear and reactivity and the in between- we gotchu! 570-438-1277 📲
