MCAS is a temporary home to some of the most vulnerable pets in our community. The hope is, our weekly posts will help get these pets into loving fur-ever homes faster! We will showcase 1 dog and 1 cat weekly!

I am Harper! I am an adorable 2-year-old with big, soulful brown eyes. I am a mixed breed, black and white girl with so much love to give. Iโ€™ve been at the shelter a long time and need a forever family!

Ever wonder what it would be like to attend a monthly all hands on deck Highland staff meeting? Well! Its your lucky day!โ€ผ

Did you know we call our monthly meetings " VISION QUEST"? (What do you think of when you hear those words?) ๐Ÿ’ญ

This months meeting featured a very special guest, Stability IT Solutions
Who has sort of been the backbone of Highland these past couple months! As you know, we have been experiencing heaps of IT issues and even lost power a couple times! Thanks to them, we are able to use our every day computers easier and with less interruptions!๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ“ฑ

It also featured a skit Directed by Dr Niehm and presented by Kelly (HR), Dr Laura, and Dr Josh about our mental models. We were challanged to use Inquiry and Advocacy instead of making assumptions. โค

Dr Burks taught us about Creatine; its history benefits. DID YOU KNOW? Creatine is a natural compound made from amino acids that helps your muscles and brain produce quick energy!๐Ÿ’ช

Dr Laura told us all about her work with the Bridge Foundation, where she helps vaccinate and vet pets. ๐ŸŒ‰

VQ is a monthly chance to make sure we are all on the same page, connect, and learn with eachother.

This is Dansby. Dr. Adkin's new pup!๐ŸคŽ

Dansby was adopted from Pet Central Helps, but his story started at a shelter in Tennessee. Apparently, he was kept as an outdoor-only dog before eventually being confiscated by Animal Control. It's honestly hard to imagine nowโ€”especially considering how much this boy loves snuggling in bed! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿพ

Unfortunately, Dansby came into his new life with heartworms.

Treating heartworm disease isn't easy. Dansby has to go through injections to kill the worms, along with medications that can leave him feeling hungry, thirsty, and not quite himself. He also hasn't been able to run, play, or exercise all summer while his body heals. For a dog who is finally getting to enjoy the good life, that's no fun at all.

The good news is that heartworm disease is preventable. โค๏ธ

Year-round heartworm prevention and annual testing are so important. Prevention is much easierโ€”and much saferโ€”than treating heartworm disease after it happens.

Dansby is safe, loved, spoiled, and very much an indoor dog now. ๐Ÿฅน๐ŸคŽ His favorite place may just be curled up in bed with his people, making up for all those years when he didn't get to know how wonderful a cozy home could be.

Don't be like Dansby. Keep your dogs on year-round heartworm prevention, and don't forget their annual heartworm test. ๐Ÿพโค๏ธ
