🐾 Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week: Management & Administration

As we wrap up Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week, we're recognizing our Management and Administrative Team β€” the people responsible for much of the behind-the-scenes work involved in operating a veterinary hospital.

Providing excellent veterinary care requires more than medical knowledge and clinical skills. It also requires an enormous amount of planning, organization, financial oversight, regulatory compliance, employee support, and day-to-day operational management.

Our management and administrative team oversees employee scheduling, recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, payroll, benefits, inventory, vendor relationships, financial operations, technology, client communications, and the development and implementation of hospital policies and procedures.

They're also responsible for addressing client concerns, supporting staff through difficult situations, maintaining regulatory and accreditation standards, coordinating equipment and facility maintenance, and finding ways to improve efficiency without compromising patient care.

Much of this work takes place outside of normal client interactions, and many of the challenges being addressed are never visible to the public.

At SHPH, management is also very much involved in daily hospital operations, stepping in to support reception, patient care, and other departments as needed.

As a locally owned and operated veterinary hospital since 1974, our leadership team works to maintain the high standards of care, personal relationships, and independent decision-making that have defined SHPH for more than 50 years.

To our Management and Administrative Team: Thank you for the work, organization, leadership, and support that help our hospital operate every day.

And to our entire SHPH team:

Throughout this week, we've highlighted five different roles, each with its own responsibilities, challenges, and specialized skills. What makes veterinary medicine work is the collaboration between all of them.

From the first phone call and initial patient assessment to diagnostics, treatment, surgery, recovery, client education, and follow-up care, every department contributes to the experience and medical care our patients receive.

Our team members routinely step outside their primary roles to help one another, share knowledge, solve problems, and ensure that our patients and clients receive the attention they deserve.

We're proud of the people who make up South Hyland Pet Hospital and grateful for the work they do, both individually and together.

Happy Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week!

🐾 Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week: Doctors of Veterinary Medicine

Today we're recognizing our veterinarians, the Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVMs) responsible for diagnosing, treating, and managing the medical needs of our patients.

Veterinary medicine is an incredibly broad and demanding profession. Unlike most physicians in human medicine, who typically specialize in one species and often one area of medicine, veterinarians must develop extensive medical knowledge across multiple species and body systems.

At South Hyland Pet Hospital, our veterinarians practice everything from preventive medicine and chronic disease management to urgent care, diagnostic imaging, dentistry, surgery, behavioral medicine, and end-of-life care.

On any given day, a veterinarian may be evaluating a dog with an unexplained illness, interpreting laboratory results, diagnosing a complicated dental condition, performing surgery, managing a diabetic cat, or developing a treatment plan for a rabbit that has stopped eating.

Their responsibilities extend well beyond the examination room. Between appointments, they're reviewing diagnostic results, interpreting specialist reports, updating medical records, developing treatment plans, consulting with colleagues, communicating with clients, and making important medical decisions for hospitalized patients.

Veterinarians must also balance medical recommendations with each patient's individual needs, quality of life, and the circumstances of the family caring for them. This requires not only medical expertise but also strong communication, critical thinking, and compassion.
And while our veterinarians are ultimately responsible for medical diagnoses and treatment decisions, the care they provide depends on the collaboration of our entire veterinary team.

To our SHPH veterinarians: Thank you for the years of education, medical expertise, thoughtful decision-making, and dedication you bring to our patients. We appreciate the responsibility you carry and the care you provide to the animals and families who trust us.

🐾 Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week: Licensed Veterinary Technicians

Today we're recognizing our Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs), highly educated and credentialed medical professionals whose responsibilities extend far beyond what many people realize.

LVTs are frequently compared to nurses in human medicine, but that comparison only begins to describe the scope of their work.

Veterinary Technicians combine responsibilities that, in human healthcare, are often divided among nurses, anesthetists, dental hygienists, laboratory technicians, radiologic technologists, phlebotomists, and other specialized medical professionals.

At SHPH, our LVTs are responsible for administering and monitoring anesthesia, performing professional dental cleanings and dental X-rays, and assisting veterinarians with surgical procedures. They also provide advanced nursing care, perform laboratory diagnostics, collect samples, obtain diagnostic images, administer prescribed medications and treatments, and monitor patients throughout their hospital visits.

They must understand anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology, dentistry, clinical pathology, and nursing care across multiple animal species.

During anesthetic procedures, for example, an LVT is responsible for continuously evaluating a patient's vital signs, anesthetic depth, ventilation, and response to medications while anticipating potential complications and communicating with the veterinarian. This requires advanced technical training, clinical judgment, and the ability to respond quickly to changing patient conditions.

Becoming an LVT involves meeting rigorous education, examination, and state licensing requirements. This professional foundation prepares veterinary technicians for the advanced medical responsibilities entrusted to them.

Our LVTs also serve as mentors and educators, helping train other members of our support team while maintaining high standards of patient care and safety.

To our SHPH LVTs: Thank you for the depth of medical knowledge, technical expertise, and professional judgment you bring to our hospital. Your training, skills, and commitment to patient safety are essential to the quality of veterinary medicine we provide.

🐾 Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week: Veterinary Assistants

Today we're recognizing our Veterinary Assistants (VAs), whose versatility, flexibility, and diverse clinical skills allow them to contribute to nearly every aspect of patient care and hospital operations.

At South Hyland Pet Hospital, our Veterinary Assistants are trained to perform an extensive range of clinical and patient care responsibilities. Working alongside our veterinarians and Licensed Veterinary Technicians, they assist with exams, collect laboratory samples, administer treatments as directed, take diagnostic images, provide patient nursing care, and educate clients.

They're also responsible for safe patient handling and restraint, preparing and maintaining medical equipment, assisting with procedures, cleaning and disinfecting treatment areas, and ensuring that our medical team has the supplies and support needed throughout the day.

Many people don't realize just how extensive the clinical skill set of a Veterinary Assistant can be. At SHPH, our VAs are trained to perform many of the same day-to-day patient care and technical tasks as our LVTs, with important distinctions in advanced responsibilities such as anesthesia, surgery, dentistry, and diagnostic testing.

Their role requires medical knowledge, technical skills, sound judgment, adaptability, and the ability to transition between a wide variety of responsibilities throughout the day. One moment they may be collecting a blood sample, the next assisting with X-rays, filling prescriptions, helping with a nervous patient, or stepping into reception to assist with a busy front desk.

The broad range of skills and responsibilities our Veterinary Assistants take on plays an important role in keeping our hospital running efficiently. Their willingness and ability to work across different areas of the hospital make them an invaluable part of our team.

To our SHPH Veterinary Assistants: Thank you for the wide range of skills you bring to patient care, your flexibility, and your commitment to supporting both our patients and your coworkers. Your contributions are essential to the care we provide every day.

🐾 Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week: Client Service Representatives

We're kicking off Veterinary Staff Appreciation Week by recognizing one of the most demanding and frequently underestimated roles in our hospital: our Client Service Representatives (CSRs), also known as Veterinary Receptionists.

If you've ever worked in veterinary reception, you know this job involves far more than answering phones and scheduling appointments.

Our CSRs are responsible for managing a constant flow of phone calls, text messages, emails, appointment requests, prescription refills, medical records, client questions, and patient arrivals and departures. They're coordinating communication between clients, veterinarians, and the medical support team while keeping track of an ever-changing schedule.

They're also often the first people to hear about a sick or injured pet. They must recognize potentially urgent medical concerns, gather important information, and communicate with the medical team to determine the appropriate next steps, all while managing the needs of clients already in the hospital.

This role requires extensive knowledge of veterinary terminology, hospital procedures, preventive care, scheduling protocols, and the many services we provide. It also requires exceptional organization, critical thinking, multitasking, and the ability to communicate clearly and compassionately, particularly when clients are worried, frustrated, or grieving.

In fact, this position is so complex and essential to our daily operations that every SHPH employee, with the exception of our veterinarians, is cross-trained to work in reception. We recognize that supporting this department is everyone's responsibility.

What clients see at the front desk is only a fraction of what our CSRs manage throughout the day. Their work directly affects patient care, communication, scheduling, and the efficiency of the entire hospital.

To our SHPH reception team: Thank you for managing an incredibly demanding role with professionalism, patience, and dedication. We recognize how much you juggle every day, and we appreciate the important work you do for our patients, clients, and coworkers.
