At 22, Shadow had seen a lot. But a mixed-up pill still caught his family off guard when he accidentally got his housemate's hydrocodone instead of his own medication.

Grapes, raisins, and even currants can be more dangerous to dogs than most pet parents realize. Even only a few grapes have been linked to sudden kidney failure that may not show up for days, and homegrown or organic grapes carry the same risk.

Veterinary medicine hasn't pinpointed why some dogs react and others don't, or confirmed what makes grapes so toxic, which is exactly why any known ingestion is treated as a potential emergency, not just the large ones.

New World Screwworm has been in the headlines lately, and you may be hearing about new medications approved to treat it.

Here's an important reminder: never give your pet any medication, including dewormers or parasite treatments, without your veterinarian's guidance. Products formulated for livestock are far more concentrated than what's safe for dogs and cats, and some pets, including certain breeds, are especially sensitive to ivermectin even at appropriate doses.

It's World Chocolate Day! Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are compounds that dogs metabolize much slower than humans. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate pose the highest risk, while even milk chocolate can cause serious problems depending on the amount consumed and your dog's size.

Roamin the cat earned his name by exploring everything he wasn't supposed to. When he dug into the trash and ate two White Castle™ sliders loaded with onions, his family thought he seemed fine, until he wasn't.

Onion toxicity is especially dangerous because signs often don't appear until several days after ingestion. By the time Roamin showed pale gums and lethargy, his red blood cell count was critically low.
