One wild mushroom, a frantic drive, and two treasured extra months.

Sammy found a mushroom on a walk near home. Within hours she was falling over and trembling. Our expert team helped identify it as Amanita pantherina and guided her owner, Taylor, to the nearest emergency hospital, where Sammy was treated and home the next day.

Sammy later passed from cancer, and Taylor shared her story so others know that help exists. Swipe to learn why every wild mushroom deserves caution.

If your pet eats something concerning, call or chat with us anytime at 800-213-6680.

We're proud to share that the veterinary toxicology team at Pet Poison Helpline received a poster award at IVECCS 2026 in Savannah.

Our research, "Oclacitinib toxicosis in dogs and cats: A retrospective analysis of poison center cases reported in 2025," takes a closer look at oclacitinib exposures reported to our poison center over the past year.

Congratulations to our veterinary toxicology team on this recognition, and thank you to the IVECCS community for a week of great learning and connection.

Read our abstract in the September 14, 2026 edition of the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (JVECC).

One pill was all it took. While her owner showered for fifteen minutes, an Italian Mastiff puppy named Phaedra chewed into an old bottle of naproxen tucked away in a dresser drawer. Naproxen is a common human pain reliever, but for dogs and cats it has a razor thin margin of safety, and even a single tablet can trigger kidney failure. Swipe through to see how fast action from her family and veterinary team saved her life. If your pet gets into a human medication, call or chat with our team right away at 800-213-6680, we are here 24/7.

At 22, Shadow had seen a lot. But a mixed-up pill still caught his family off guard when he accidentally got his housemate's hydrocodone instead of his own medication.

His family tried to help him vomit at home. It didn't work, and it's never safe to try with cats. They called Pet Poison Helpline on the way to the emergency room, and Shadow made a full recovery.

Senior pets get into just as much trouble as younger ones. If your pet has been exposed to something dangerous, call or chat with our team any time at 800-213-6680.

Grapes, raisins, and even currants can be more dangerous to dogs than most pet parents realize. Even only a few grapes have been linked to sudden kidney failure that may not show up for days, and homegrown or organic grapes carry the same risk.

Veterinary medicine hasn't pinpointed why some dogs react and others don't, or confirmed what makes grapes so toxic, which is exactly why any known ingestion is treated as a potential emergency, not just the large ones.

If your dog gets into grapes, raisins, currants, or anything made with them, call or chat with our veterinary professionals at 800-213-6680.

Every pet parent knows the feeling: one video says lilies are harmless if trimmed carefully, the next says a single drop of essential oil will kill your cat. It is hard to know which warnings deserve your attention and which are just noise.

Here is a simple test. Ask who is talking. Our toxicology experts spend every day reviewing the most current information in veterinary toxicology and talking on the phone with pet parents and veterinary professionals working through real poisoning cases.

That is the difference between a claim and a source. If you are ever unsure whether something is actually dangerous for your pet, skip the guesswork and call or chat with us at 800-213-6680. We are here 24/7.

Not all chocolate carries the same risk for your dog. The amount of theobromine, the compound that makes chocolate dangerous, varies a lot between white chocolate and something like baker's chocolate, and your dog's size matters too.

Our new Chocolate Toxicity Calculator gives you a starting point on what to look for and what to do next. Answer two quick questions to get general guidance on your pet’s exposure.

Our calculator is a great starting point, but it cannot replace a professional assessment, especially since symptoms do not always show up right away. Call or chat with our expert team for guidance tailored to your pet and their exposure at 800-213-6680.

Tornado the Cocker Spaniel earned his name the hard way when he snatched a bottle of minoxidil tablets right off the table and chewed his way into an emergency.

His family caught it fast thanks to another very good dog, and the toxicology experts at Pet Poison Helpline helped guide his treatment from there.

Swipe through to see how a curious pup and a fast phone call turned a scary afternoon into a happy ending.

If your pet gets into any medication, call or chat with Pet Poison Helpline right away at 800-213-6680.
