Loose-leash walking doesn’t mean your dog has to spend the entire walk glued to your leg.
Board & Train pup NELLIE showing off the two versions of loose-leash walking we teach our dogs.
First: the free walk. On a 20-foot long line, Nellie has the freedom to sniff, explore, take in her environment, and, most importantly, make choices. She gets to be a dog while still learning how to do it responsibly.
Second: the more formal heel. This is structured movement with Nellie positioned right at our side, ready to follow direction and maintain focus when the situation calls for it.
Both have their time, place, and purpose.
The goal isn’t a dog glued to your leg for the entire walk. It’s also not a dog dragging you wherever it wants to go.
The goal is communication, control, and freedom.
And in both versions, the leash stays loose—making the walk more enjoyable for everyone.
