Opossums really do carry a biochemical defense that lets them survive venom from snakes dangerous to many other mammals, but their famous tick-fighting reputation is less certain.

The venom resistance is the extraordinary part.

A 1977 Toxicon study challenged Virginia opossums with snakebites and venom doses up to 60 times levels lethal to susceptible mammals, documenting strong resistance to pit viper envenomation.

Later work found natural proteins in opossum serum that inhibit venom metalloproteinases, helping block hemorrhagic tissue damage.

That protection helps explain why Virginia opossums can prey on venomous snakes, including rattlesnakes.

The oft-repeated tick claim came from a 2009 laboratory study estimating that opossums consumed 96.5 percent of larval blacklegged ticks attempting to feed.

But a 2021 field-based study found no ticks in 32 opossum stomachs and no supporting evidence across 23 diet studies.

Their proven superpower is venom resistance, and it is remarkable enough on its own.
