A little vulnerable post about things weighing on me…
I’ve always cared way too much about what other people think. I’ve always been the person who doesn’t ask for anything, helps everyone else, does everything myself, and tries to cut a deal whenever I can because I felt guilty taking someone else’s money.
I started my business because it’s something I’m truly passionate about. Before this journey, I never would have thought to pay someone to groom my dogs—I did it myself at home. I never would have paid someone to board them because we were lucky enough to have family who could watch them. And honestly, I used to think businesses like mine were overpriced.
Then I became the person behind the business.
I quickly realized just how much time, care, effort, product, cleaning, patience and love goes into caring for someone else’s pets. What looks expensive from the outside often isn’t expensive at all when you break it down.
$30 a day for boarding might sound like a lot. But when you’re the person who gets up first thing in the morning to let dogs outside, feeds them, takes them on multiple walks, makes sure they’re comfortable, cleans up the messes, replaces a damaged bed or door, keeps the heat or air conditioning running, and spends your entire day making sure someone’s beloved pet is safe and happy… that $30 can work out to barely over $1 an hour.
I left a full-time job making $55/hour to pursue something I’m passionate about. I chose to build a business where I could spend my days caring for animals and doing everything I possibly can to give them the best experience.
So yes, maybe to you, it seems expensive.
But to me, it’s getting by while taking care of your loved ones.
I’m learning to stop feeling guilty about charging what my time, experience, supplies, overhead and care are actually worth. And I’m learning that making a living doing something I love doesn’t mean I’m taking advantage of anyone.
To all the groomers, boarders, doggy daycare owners and other animal-care professionals out there: I see you. ❤️
The hard work, long hours and compassion you put into these animals may not always pay as much as it should—but the love and care you give them is worth so much more than a price tag.
You’re not just charging for a service.
You’re caring for someone’s family. 🐾
