Board Of Animal Health Kennel License We are dedicated to rescuing dogs and cats left homeless for whatever reason – focusing on the ones with major medical issues or of senior age. These are the ones that are usually overloo

ked because they are not “highly adoptable.” They are also the ones that cost the most to the organizations. We believe they are the most in need of help! We place dogs and cats in loving, responsible, committed permanent homes, following a comprehensive adoption process which includes taking considerable care in finding good matches and educating prospective adopters about the responsibilities and costs of bringing a dog or cat into their homes and lives. Taking in major medical cases and senior animals means that they will likely have more care needed life long. We make sure that they are placed in homes that are able to financially and physically care for them long term. Animals in our care are all spayed or neutered, receive all appropriate veterinary care and treatment, and placed in nurturing foster homes while they await placement in their permanent homes. We assist dogs and cats in distress without regard to age, breed or ease of placement. To the extent our finances allow, dogs and cats in the greatest need take priority. We have partnered with some of the best and the brightest in the Veterinary Medical field and we are committed to giving every animal in our care the best chance at a happy forever. We do not shy away from unconventional routes and are always looking for ways to push forward the medical advances for animals. From fish skin grafts on trauma cases, to prosthetics for amputees, to FIP treatments that save lives as never before, we will make sure every option is exhausted for our major medical cases. Many animals that would have immediately been euthanized in the shelter, now have a chance to live and thrive with their varied medical conditions. We never euthanize animals due to space or time constraints, but we may elect to euthanize in the event of a severe, untreatable/debilitating illness or extremely dangerous behavioral concerns. Because we do not kill to make space, however, we cannot take in every animal that needs help. Current adoptable pets can be found on our website as well as our Petfinder link https://www.petfinder.com/pet-search?query_id=A4F0C158-715A-11E7-8DF1-83FBF62E21C6&page_number=0

**Angie update**

This girl is in worse shape than originally thought. She cannot hold herself up or really move. Her neck is likely injured as well because she cannot eat out of a bowl, we have to hand feed her.

She is a fighter though and she seems to almost smile whenever we give her soft and quiet attention.

The plan for now is to keep things calm and let her body heal from whatever she went through. She is on a slew of medications to keep her comfortable and fight the infection in her lungs.

Thank you for the continued support 🙏

This one stings...
When you look at this photo you may say "awe look how cute"
When you hear her story you will have an overwhelming flood of emotions.

5 fractured ribs
Left femur fracture
Left for more than 2 weeks without care which lead to:
Pneumonia
Unable to walk/move much
Not eating

The cause - cruelty and abuse at the hands of minors. Why? We will never know because no one is talking. Justice? Nope because no one is talking.

Things are rarely fair in the world of animal welfare. What makes "sense" to us rarely goes the right way in the legal world. And before you comment, "call the police" "they should be charged" "someone needs to be held responsible" "animal cruelty is illegal" yes, we know. Unfortunately, to prove actual cruelty is almost impossible without video evidence or at the very least an eye witness statement. And before you say "animal cruelty is a felony now" yes, that may be true but only if said animal dies from the abuse/injuries... if they survive it's just a misdemeanor. "Kids who hurt animals grow up to hurt people" yep we know. All of the appropriate steps were taking in this case, police were called, an I mal control was called, case reports were made, things were investigated and even though everyone is in agreement with what happened here, with no proof/evidence/witnesses nothing more can be done.

Now that we have gotten the case straight, meet Angie ❤️
She is a 12 week old pit bull mix and she is perfect.
We can fix broken bones and she can recover from pneumonia. The road will be long and expensive and we have committed to taking over her story from here. Her past is just that and we will not discuss things or even think about it anymore.

Angie needs the community to surround her with the support and love she deserves. You're donations will save her life. Abuse and cruelty will not win here, they will not claim this puppy's life.

In rescue we are here to pick up the pieces and make it so these animals don't need to ever think about their past again.

So feel free to say "Hey Ange" and leave her a note and maybe a couple bucks! We will keep everyone updated on her progress.

The time has come for our sweet baby British Lab girls to find their forever families!

Bo and Sammy were born at the end of June 2025. They are purebred British Labrador Retrievers who are sisters. At about 12 weeks old their breeder noticed that they were having issues keeping their food and water down after eating. They were not gaining the weight they should be either. When taken to their vet it was discovered that they have a congenital condition called Megaesophagus. This is when the part of the stomach that is supposed to tighten at the top to keep the food down does not function correctly and in turn causes their Esophagus to stretch out. When this happens food that they swallow comes right back out. It is called regurgitation, not vomiting.

Because of this condition they will need to eat in special chairs for life. The nice thing is, since they joined us at 12 weeks old, they have been eating in these chairs and are fully trained to them. Currently they eat 3 times a day. We soak their Nutrisource kibble in water and they get that along with some unflavored gelatin cubes. Meal time is their favorite time 🙂

They are special needs due to this but they can live long and happy lives despite their condition. They love to go for walks, run around in the backyard, play with toys and snuggle with people just like any other dog. They will likely not be able to go swimming due to the increased risk of aspirating water into their lungs. They cannot drink water from a bowl or have treats like usual. Instead they get hydration from the gelatin cubes and can have the human toddler puffs for treats, the ones that melt in their mouth.

These ladies love other dogs but also need to be adopted separately. We do not adopt littermate puppies due to the risk of littermate syndrome. They have been housed separately but eat together in side by side chairs.

You will not meet sweeter girls! Bo would be an excellent running partner and she is the more outgoing and mischievous sister 😉

We introduced Briella earlier spring of 2025 when she was impounded at a local animal control. She had a bad limp and when they brought her into the emergency clinic, it was determined she had a bad hip, broken leg, multiple fractured ribs and a couple skull fractures… all in varying stages of healing. This is a tell tale sign of abuse unfortunately.
When she arrived we immediately got to work on her medical issues. She needed her rear leg amputated but thankfully so doesn’t miss it. She is a short, petite thing weighing in at about 45 #.
Unfortunately, physical trauma wasn’t all she needed to overcome. Briella had some mental instability from psychological trauma. She was never shown how to be a dog and what was appropriate and not. She didn’t have manners or boundaries and she had no clue how to act on a leash.

This is where our amazing friends at 2nd Chance To Shine in La Crosse came in. They accepted her into their program and got to work right away. She was immediately given boundaries and expectations. Routines are what dogs live by and without one can cause unnecessary chaos. Briella was working in manners and simple obedience as well as leash work. The next few months were exactly what she needed. It was also determined that since she has so much pent up anxiety, she would benefit from an anti-anxiety medication. At a low/effective dose, she has made huge progress. This medication is inexpensive and whenever she is able to get into a forever home, she will likely be able to be weaned off them.

Finally, Briella needed to learn appropriate behavior around other dogs. This was another skill she was never taught. She came in hot to every new dog she met. This was frequently met with a verbal and physical correction by the other dog and then an inappropriate reaction by Briella. She has been doing incredibly well and now is in doggie daycare everyday!

As you can see she has found her “sea legs” when it comes to life in general. This girl is a true success story and deserves an amazing life moving forward!
Briella is about 3.5 years old and full of love and life!

Meet Happy ❤️

Happy is a charming little Chihuahua mix who proves that age is truly just a number. At 10+ years old and around 12 pounds, this sweet senior still has plenty of pep in his step and so much love left to give. In fact, most people would never guess his age based on his playful spirit, bright personality, and zest for life.

Happy is exactly what his name suggests — affectionate, gentle, spunky, confident, and incredibly devoted to his people. He absolutely loves being near his humans, whether that means curling up for snuggles on the couch, riding shotgun on a car ride, or simply sitting beside you while you go about your day. He’s happiest when he’s close to the people he loves.

This little guy gets along wonderfully with people and does well with other dogs. He seems like he’d really enjoy having a canine companion to run around with, especially another dog his size, though he could likely do well with a respectful larger dog too. On walks or in the yard he may bark at other dogs, but once he actually meets them, he’s completely friendly and relaxed. Happy hasn’t shown much interest in toys, and he’s very respectful about sharing space and belongings.

He can also coexist with dog-savvy cats, though adopters should know he does enjoy trying to “manage” them a little. If a cat runs, he may chase, but if the cat ignores him, he quickly loses confidence in the whole mission. He responds well to redirection and isn’t aggressive — just a tiny neighborhood watchman in Chihuahua form.

Happy does well on walks, enjoys car rides, and settles nicely at home. He may need a belly band while adjusting to a new routine if left alone, so adopters should plan to supervise and stay consistent during the transition period.

Like many senior pups, Happy has a few medical needs, but they are very manageable. He had most of his teeth removed, so he happily eats soft food — and would gladly convince you he’s starving five minutes after dinner. He also has an enlarged heart and takes one inexpensive pill daily, easily hidden in food or cheese. Thankfully, he currently shows no signs of congestive heart failure, and his medication is helping him continue to thrive.

Happy’s story could have ended very differently. He was abandoned while suffering from a very large oral tumor, but after surgery, the tumor was found to be benign. Now, this resilient little dog has been given a fresh start and a second chance at the life he deserves.

Underneath his brave and funny personality is a very sensitive soul. Happy wears every emotion on his tiny face, and once he bonds with you, he loves deeply. Because of that, he would do best with someone who is home much of the time and wants a loyal little shadow by their side. If there’s already another dog in the home, Happy may initially try to keep his person all to himself — but once he learns there’s enough love to go around, he settles in beautifully.

Happy has survived abandonment, medical challenges, and heartbreak, yet he still greets the world with trust, love, and hope. Now all he needs is a forever family ready to cherish him for the wonderful little dog he is.

I might have zero brain cells, but I got all the love to give.
I enjoy the outdoors, playing with my foster siblings (dogs and cats) and snuggle time. Carrying around stuffies is my favorite activity. I’m reliable off leash, traveling to far from my humans is to scary, so I remain close. Saying that I’m a perfect soux chef in the kitchen I will always be at your feet.

I’m still learning to use the toilet outside, about 92% trained. Don’t let that scare you, as I’m also a perfect gentlemen everywhere else. Surprise me with all the chew toys and stuffies. I came from a place who didn’t supply these amazing things.

This cat had an indoor home until recently when his owners moved... instead of taking them with or rehoming them, the kicked them outside, shut the door and moved. He and his sister were found by a neighbor and they started caring for them as outdoor cats. They came to us because they were not altered and the neighbor didn't want them reproducing.
