A $15 million gift from animal advocates Karen Waldron and Shawn Ricci marks the largest single non-estate donation in Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine's history.

Split evenly between clinical and research support, the funds will endow three oncology professorships, add specialist staff, and expand patient care at the Animal Cancer Care and Research Center in Roanoke.

The gift also accelerates translational cancer research, advancing therapies that directly benefit both pets and people. 🧡

Meet September's Student AND Alumni Spotlight: Carley Elliott '21, MPH '23!

Carley has become increasingly passionate about the health and well-being of both humans and animals and the ways diseases like cancer impact us all. She cares for a feral cat colony, has a personal cat named Cheech, a 4-foot ball python named Noodle, and wishes she had the ability to talk and listen to each of them.

Elliana Vickers Ph.D. '26 grew up wanting to be a veterinarian, but her path led her through a doctorate in translational biology, medicine, and health first, researching how focused sound waves can treat bone cancer in dogs.

This fall, she joined the VMCVM Class of 2030, bringing that research experience full circle into clinical care. 🧡

Danika the dressage horse never had a bad moment in her life — until a softball-sized tumor threatened to end her show career. Thanks to H-FIRE, a cutting-edge treatment at Virginia Tech's Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center, the mass shrank by more than 90%, and Danika is back in the saddle. 🐴
