Venmo: County Humane Society

We are an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)3 organization that runs exclusively on donations and the occasional small g

rant. Bingham County is blessed with generous veterinary clinics that allow us to sell low cost spay and neuter vouchers to assist Bingham County residents in financial need. BCHS also pays money towards every cat voucher to assist in the total savings. The veterinarians and the Bingham County Humane Society do this to help end the suffering and euthanasia of healthy and treatable cats and dogs in Bingham County. BCHS has a small, cat only shelter that assists the residents of Bingham County in rehoming healthy, companion cats, and unwanted kittens. We are not a municipal animal shelter and not affiliated with the Humane Society of the United States. Unfortunately, we cannot take in and house injured, ill, or feral cats due to space and cost. Please take those animals to a veterinarian or the Blackfoot Animal Shelter located at 199 Frontage Road. Their phone number is 208-785-6897. After business hours please call police dispatch at 208-785-1234 for assistance. Please do not dump animals in the country or leave them outside at our location. Give the animals a chance by taking them to the shelter. We do have a limited number of older/special needs adoptable cats housed at our location, most of our kittens and young adult cats can be adopted through our shelter at 766 S Broadway, in Blackfoot, just call/text 208-680-3881 to set up an appointment or the PetSmart adoption center in Idaho Falls at 2300 E 17th. Please take care when entering our building, we do have a couple of resident cats who are loose. Please don't let them out!

How does spaying and neutering saves lives?
Kittens born outside have less than a 75% surviving a year. If you spay/neuter your own pets, their kittens/puppies don’t take the homes from kittens/puppies in shelters. It can also save your pets life. Cancers found in intact animals are rarely found in fixed pets. Some cancers, like testicular cancer is impossible.
Your community and neighborhood will be happier that you’re not adding to stray cat population.
As far as cats being “not your cat”, they’ve been let down by their people, it takes good people to step up and help.

It is always a treat when we at the Bingham County Humane Society get pictures and updates on how one of our kitties is doing that we have adopted out to a loving family.
This is Zoe renamed Rusty. Relaxing with her family. She couldn't look more happy.

And then we have our Fosters who take in a lot of our kittens and give them so much care and socialize them with their family and other pets. We always love to see the creative ways they figure out how to feed a kitten.

We couldn't get along without caring adopters and loving Fosters.

The Bingham County Humane Society in Blackfoot has lots of kitties waiting for their forever homes.
All of our kitties are spayed / neutered, dewormed, up-to-date on all of their vaccines, Vet checked, and microchipped.
See all of our kitties available for adoption, and also our future kitties, on our web page.

This is not the Bingham County Humane Society's post, It came from thatswhatfriendsarefor.org, but it sums up part of what we as rescuers go through EVERYDAY when we are asked to rescue an animal or animals.

I know everyone just wants the cute and fluffy melts your heart posts, so you wont like or share this, but this is the reality of what rescues have to contend with daily, all because people will not take responsibility to spay and neuter their pets, or step up to the plate when they ask us to rescue and take animals in.

If you really do care, like and share.

Here it is.

WHEN YOU CALL A RESCUER ABOUT A CAT OR A KITTEN...
Don’t Be Worthless.
Let’s start with this important fact:
I am not a rescue. I’m just a regular person who steps in when I see an animal in trouble — like so many others who can’t turn their back on suffering.
In fact, the cats and kittens are fortunate that a team of animal lovers and generous contributors helps me to help them. I am grateful for all their support and because of it more cats and kittens are saved.
So let me explain what really happens when you call a rescue or someone like me about an animal in need.

The Cost of Caring Isn’t Just Emotional — IT'S FINANCIAL!

In the animal rescue world, it’s fairly common for people to call rescuers expecting them to take in animals for free. No donation. No supplies. Just a request: “Can you help this animal?”

While this may seem normal or even generous on the part of the person asking us to take unwanted or injured animals, the truth is this practice LIMITS how many animals we can help. It places the greatest burden — emotional, physical, and financial — on the very people already doing the most!

You may think, “Well, they’re a rescue, that’s their job.” But here’s the reality:

The moment a rescuer agrees to take that kitten or cat, or litter, they’re committing at least $200 per animal in veterinary care, spaying/neutering, food, vaccines, litter, and supplies — usually much more!
And that is not even considering the value of their time!
Most volunteers in a shelter are UNPAID!

They’re not only covering those costs out of their own pockets (often without reimbursement) or they are conducting time-consuming fundraising efforts begging and pleading for contributions, and they’re also sacrificing sleep, time with their families, and their mental health to do what YOU want done, but you didn’t do or couldn’t do.

You Saw It. You Cared. Now Step Up.

Yes, you noticed the animal in need — that matters. But once you call and hand it off, you move on with your life. You go back to your Starbucks latte, your evening plans, your bed, NO FINANCIAL OR EMOTIONAL SKIN IN THE GAME FOR YOU.

Meanwhile, the rescuer is up at 3 AM bottle-feeding a kitten you wanted saved — wondering how they’re going to afford food for the other 20 animals in their care.

Do You Really Care? Prove It.

If you truly care about the animal you called about, then do more than only making the call.
Offer to help with costs!
Even $5 helps.
Ask your friends and family to chip in.
Share the story on social media and ask others to donate.
Offer to foster short-term. Deliver supplies. Help with transport. Help with gas money for the volunteer.

Even school kids sell candy bars to raise money for things that matter to them.
YOU CAN DO SOMETHING TO HELP THE RESCUER HELP THE ANIMAL YOU WANTED HELPED!

Let’s Talk Numbers
That mama cat and her 7 kittens you just dropped off? That’s about $1,600 in expenses — and that’s a low-end estimate.

Who’s supposed to cover that?
The person who’s already at their breaking point, trying to help dozens of other animals they were begged to take in?

The Hard Truth
If you call a rescuer, hand them an animal, and do nothing else, you’ve done the bare minimum — and maybe not even that.

Yes, I’m going to say it:
If you expect someone else to do all the work and pay all the costs to help an animal that YOU want helped — and you offer nothing — you’re being worthless.

You wanted to help? Then help!

Final Word
You don't need to be a vet or a rescue organization to make a difference. But if you're not willing to spend any of your time, money, or energy beyond a phone call, don’t pat yourself on the back for “helping.”

If you care about the animal, then be part of the solution — not just the person who passes the buck and walks away.
Don't be worthless.
