As the 4th of July approaches, it's crucial to remember the safety of our pets!

On the 5th of July, more pets end up lost and taken to shelters than any other day of the year.

The loud noises from fireworks can be terrifying for most dogs, causing them to flee.

To help keep pets out of shelters and make sure your pet finds its way back home, OAA and Midtown Kia are offering 250 FREE microchips and pet ID tags at “Microchips, Tags & Wags.”

The event will take place a Yale Avenue Christian Church on Sunday, June 28 from 12:00-4:00 pm in the gymnasium.

Please make sure all dogs are on a leash and cats are in carriers.

What do you do if you have new dog neighbors next-door?

Start practicing before they even move in.

Practice a super solid recall in the backyard. That way you can use the recall to call your dog away from the fence, call your dog to you if they are barking at the new neighbor dog and call your dog to come inside so the new neighbor dog can explore their surroundings.

If you have a dog at home that is “selective” and you are looking for a canine addition to your home, look for a dog that has a very laid back social personality. It is much easier than bringing a dog in to your home and then have Two dogs that aren’t social. You can also foster a social dog to see if it is a good match for your home. The more information you have before the introduction, the more predictable outcome.

Please bring your dogs inside.

We are facing a prolonged winter storm with well over 100 hours of below-freezing temperatures ahead. This isn’t a cold snap…this is dangerous, life-threatening weather for animals.

Dogs and cats cannot survive prolonged exposure to these temperatures without a heated, dry, indoor place to stay warm. Straw, blankets, dog houses, or “they’ll be fine” are not enough when temperatures stay this low for this long.

Hypothermia and frostbite happen quickly. Suffering happens silently.

If you love them…bring them inside.
If you can’t bring them inside…reach out for help.
If you see animals left outdoors in these conditions…say something.

We will never judge someone for asking for help.
We will speak up for the animals who cannot.

Please choose compassion. Please choose warmth.
Bring them in.

Prepare for cold weather! Bring them inside and be ready to entertain! You can stock up on toys, busy enrichment puzzles or make your own enrichment toys!
