The Dakota Zoo was founded in 1961 by Marc & Betty Christianson with the help of a host of dedicated volunteers. The Dakota Zoo opened its gates on June 3, 1961 on 15 acres of developed land, with 75 mammals and 23 birds, and 40,000 visitors passed through the gates that first year. Today, thanks to the continued support of members, visitors, donors and volunteers, the Dakota Zoo has grown to a 90

acre facility housing 600 animals, birds, reptiles and fish representing 125 species and visited by more than 150,000 people each year.

Peekaboo 👀

Our Pallas’s Cat Laura has FIVE little kittens slowly starting to make their debut out of the nest box. You may catch glimpses of them when you visit - especially on cooler days. The dad, Fin, is separated next door where he can keep a watchful eye on his family from a safe distance.

Pallas’s cats are native to Central Asia and are well adapted to warm summers and cold winters. These wildcats are known for their iconic “grumpy” face and small stature.

Plan a visit to come see them soon! Open daily 10am to 6pm.

Happy birthday to this handsome fellow! 🎉
Amur tiger Spoutnik — affectionately known as “Spud” around here — turns 13 today! As the father of Nikolai, Spud is loved for his calm, laid-back personality and regal presence.

Amur tigers are an endangered species, but ongoing conservation efforts have helped increase their numbers in recent years, offering hope for their future in the wild. The Dakota Zoo Conservation Fund proudly supports these important projects each year thanks to your continued support and donations.

Help us wish Spud a very happy 13th birthday! 🐅🎂
