A little update from 701 Homestead ❤️

We wanted to take a moment to check in and share how things have been going, since we’ve had quite a few people reach out.

First and most importantly — we are both doing really well. After multiple scans, I’m happy to say I’ve fully recovered, and we’re incredibly grateful for that.

Over the past year, we’ve taken some time for ourselves and have been doing quite a bit of traveling — away from home nearly six months out of the year. The majority of it has been the fun kind of travel!

We took one trip traveling down the West Coast, and then this winter we headed south, spending time in West Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. As we continue working toward our goal of visiting all the national parks (someday!), we’ve now visited 34. We’ve seen and experienced so many amazing things along the way.

As part of this season of life, we’ve been intentionally scaling back the business to focus more on ourselves and making sure we have time for what matters most. That said, we do still have some ongoing business expenses, so we’ve taken on a few custom projects here and there.

And of course — we still have our bees 🐝
They actually did very well over the winter! So far, all of our hives have survived. We’re waiting until after this cold snap to open them up and really see how they’re doing and get them ramped up for spring.

We also just want to say thank you. The messages, check-ins, and support we’ve received have meant more than we can express. It’s been such a blessing to meet so many of you — it has truly been more than just a transaction, and we’ve always felt like this has been more than just a business.

We do see ourselves offering things again in some capacity — maybe small pop-up items here and there — but for now, we’re taking things season by season and listening to where life leads us.

Good morning! I hope everyone’s summer has been filled with many great memories. Over these warm months, our bees have been busy gathering nectar—it’s always a joy to see them buzzing around the yard.

This past weekend, we harvested their honey. As the weather cools, it’s the perfect time to get restocked—or to share a sweet gift with family and friends.

Organic Bare-Root Strawberry Plants ~ Albion

Our bare-root strawberry plants arrived today! For the past five years, we've planted Albion everbearing strawberries—and they've never disappointed. These plants produce large, beautiful berries all summer long. While they can survive North Dakota winters with proper covering, we prefer to grow ours in containers and replant each spring.

We've sorted the plants, keeping the smaller ones for ourselves and offering the best, largest ones to you. The roots look fantastic and are ready for planting. We’re keeping them dormant in the fridge until you're ready to plant.

The nice weather over the past few days has been so renewing, and with the upcoming rain, the grass and trees will green up—lifting our spirits.

Over the past couple of weeks, we spent time in Rochester at Mayo Clinic. Wow—what a great experience, though it was a little overwhelming on the first day. We met with a couple of different neurosurgeons who noticed discrepancies in the imaging from Fargo and recommended another angiogram to obtain clearer imagery and help develop a treatment plan.

During the procedure, the surgeon would periodically pause, leave to consult with the neuro team, and return to gather additional images. This happened several times and gave us great comfort—knowing they were taking all the time they needed to ensure the best possible outcome.

From the new images, they determined that the base of the aneurysm is bulging and has a large auxiliary artery branching from the back. On one hand, this greatly increases the risk of intervention, as addressing it could potentially cause a stroke. However, the artery at the back may actually help reduce pressure and, in turn, lower the risk of rupture.

At this time, the team feels the risk of treatment outweighs the potential benefit, especially since it would likely require open cranial surgery. The plan is to monitor the area with a scan in six months. Fortunately, they believe the chance of rupture is low, and we can continue living a full and active life.

These past four months have been an emotional rollercoaster, and we’re looking forward to putting this chapter behind us. This trip brought a lot of comfort, and I feel good about the future. We’ll still take things a little slower this summer—with a few more naps. Thank you so much for all the support and prayers—it has meant the world to us!

Good morning,

Not the message I was planning to write. This week marks the start of our 2025 growing season as we begin seed planting.

I’ve been feeling good—other than still getting tired now and then, I’ve felt back to normal. To be cautious, we delayed everything until after my three-month angiogram checkup earlier this week. Our trip was filled with optimism—spring always brings renewed spirits, and we were excited to get back to normal.

The procedure went smoothly, and during recovery, we waited for the doctor’s update. When he stopped in, he let us know the aneurysm that ruptured in late December looks good. Yay! But then he told us I have another aneurysm. Boo…

This one is close to the previous one and unruptured. Because of its shape and its location—right where the carotid artery branches—it adds more complexity. This was very unexpected. They were willing to perform corrective surgery the next day, but it was a lot to process. Maybe we weren’t fully prepared, or maybe we just didn’t feel strongly confident in the proposed approach. Either way, we decided to postpone the surgery and seek additional opinions. We’ve now scheduled a second opinion in Fargo and received a referral to Mayo. So now we wait…

So, what does this mean for 701 Homestead?

After looking forward to our 2025 growing season, we’ve made the tough decision to pause and focus on my care. There’s currently a lot of uncertainty, and we believe we need to prioritize health and healing. That means we won’t be growing anything this year, so many of the products we typically make will be unavailable. However, we’ll still try to offer our other non-garden items, as those tend to be less time-sensitive.

When you build up a small business, the last thing you want to do is take a break. Please know this wasn’t an easy decision. Your support—both personally and for 701 Homestead—means the world to us. It might sound strange, but thank you for everything you’ve done to get us to this point, and making this a hard decision.

An Unexpected Turn

Good morning, this is Jen. The past 45 days have been quite the journey. Just a couple of days before Christmas, I experienced an intense headache that felt like someone was stabbing the top of my head. We went to the Bismarck ER, where doctors determined that I was having a hemorrhagic stroke. This type of stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures, causing bleeding into the brain tissue. I was quickly airlifted to Fargo, where they successfully addressed the aneurysm. I then spent 12 days in the ICU. Fortunately, we started the new year on a hopeful note, as I was discharged on January 1st.

So, what does this mean for 701 Homestead? We’re still figuring that out.

Although I am recovering well, I still have some off days, and things are moving at a slower pace. I have multiple follow-up appointments in Fargo and will have more clarity soon. I truly believe I will make a full recovery.

For now, we won’t be making new products for the next couple of weeks. However, we do have some products available if you’re interested. Thank you for your patience and support!

Thank you for your continued support. It brings us so much joy to have so many people return for our products. It makes it way more than a job; we feel like we are making things for our 701 Homestead Family.

Well, we have been putting in several full days making krumkaka and rosettes to fill orders. We have a house FULL of goodies. Put up a few folding tables and things are tucked in everywhere. I almost forgot! We made cinnamon pickles this summer in anticipation for the holidays. What are cinnamon pickles? They are cucumbers soaked in a food-grade lye and then soaked in a sugar solution with red-hot candies for several days before processing. They are crisp with a sweet cinnamon flavor. It has been years since having any. Who remembers having these when you were younger?
