From time to time, we hear people express concerns that training will "break their dog's spirit" or turn them into a robot.
The reality is that good training doesn't take away a dog's personality. It teaches them how to make better decisions.
Many of the dogs we work with struggle with reactivity, anxiety, excessive barking, leash pulling, jumping, or becoming overly emotional when faced with distractions. When those behaviors improve, some people mistake a calmer dog for an unhappy dog.
But calm doesn't mean unhappy.
In many cases, the dog is actually less stressed and more capable of navigating the world successfully. Rather than reacting emotionally to every trigger, they learn to keep their emotions in check and make better decisions.
I think about it the same way I think about raising children. We don't let our kids do whatever they want without rules, boundaries, and accountability. Most people would agree that structure helps children thrive—not that it breaks their spirit. The same is true for dogs.
A trained dog isn't a robot. A trained dog is simply a dog that understands expectations and has earned more freedom to enjoy life.
Have you ever heard someone say that training changes a dog's personality?
