🐾🇺🇸 Remembering the Canine Heroes of 9/11 🇺🇸🐾
In the hours and days following September 11, 2001, hundreds of specially trained dogs arrived at Ground Zero alongside their handlers. More than 300 canine responders are estimated to have taken part in the search, rescue, and recovery efforts following the attacks.
These dogs worked long hours over unstable piles of debris, using their incredible sense of smell to search for survivors.
Among these brave four-legged heroes was K-9 Sirius, a four-year-old Labrador Retriever and Port Authority Police Department K-9 partnered with Lt. David Lim. Sirius was trained as an explosives-detection dog and was stationed beneath the South Tower when the attacks began. Lt. Lim secured Sirius in his kennel before going to help others, promising that he would return.
Lt. Lim survived. Sirius, tragically, did not.
Sirius is remembered as the only police dog killed in the attacks. His remains were recovered from the South Tower wreckage and were given a ceremonial es**rt from Ground Zero, honoring him as a member of the Port Authority Police Department.
Today, we remember Sirius and every canine who served alongside the brave men and women of 9/11 — for their courage, their loyalty, and the comfort they brought when it was needed most.
