Greater Birmingham Humane Society

Greater Birmingham Humane Society GBHS's mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals and people. We are funded by generous donors in our community and abroad.

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, founded in 1883, is the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama. Over the course of our history we have witnessed the changes in our community and yet have never left the original mission of Dr. Phillips “to promote the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy and services.”

The Greater Birmingham Humane Society is an open access humane society, meaning that we will accept any owned animal in need of our services.

Well, this is ironical.

Here in Birmingham, a proposed 300-megawatt AI factory wants to build near the Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s future medical model campus, where rescued, injured, abandoned, and vulnerable animals are supposed to heal.

At this point, the animals would like a little space.

Now, a data center developer wants to build next to the Nashville Zoo.

Here are three things you can do right now:

Read the graphic/handout in the comments or check the link on our page. We broke down what is missing from the proposed data center ordinance and why it matters.

Show up Tuesday, June 9 at 9:00 AM for the Birmingham City Council meeting. The meeting starts at 9:00 AM. Please get there early.

This is a public hearing, and your voice matters. Whether you are concerned about animal welfare, neighborhoods, transparency, water, power, noise, heat, or the public’s right to be heard, now is the time to show up.

Sign the petition. Read the graphic. Be there June 9.

No one brightens your day quite like a furry friend.

Whether it's a puppy greeting you at the door, a dog by your side on every adventure, a kitten making you laugh, or a cat curled up beside you after a long day, pets have a way of making life better.

At GBHS, we have dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens with all kinds of wonderful personalities, and each one is hoping to find a family of their own.

Come meet our pets and see who brings a little extra joy to your life.

Not ready to adopt? Donations help us provide food, medical care, enrichment, and comfort for the pets still waiting for homes.

Opal lost her leg because a lead was wrapped so tightly around it that circulation was cut off.

Please donate today to help provide lifesaving medical care for animals like Opal.
https://ow.ly/PBcQ50Z7GgR

Today, Opal is healed, healthy, spayed, vaccinated, and ready to find her family. But her story is exactly why medical care is such a critical part of our mission.

Every day, animals come to GBHS injured, sick, scared, or in need of urgent treatment. Some need surgery. Some need rehabilitation. Some need time, foster care, and medical support before they are ready for adoption.

Your gift helps make that care possible.

Donate today to support lifesaving medical care for shelter pets.

Opal is also available for adoption and would make a wonderful companion. If you are able, you can also support our animals by donating dog food, cat food, puppy food, kitten food, or items from our Amazon wishlist.

This is bigger than one click.

Today, ComebackTown published an op-ed from GBHS CEO Allison Black Cornelius about what is happening in Oxmoor Valley and why the June 9th Birmingham City Council meeting matters.

GBHS is building a future campus where broken and abandoned animals will finally have a place to heal. Across the way, a foreign-owned company is already building a hyperscale AI factory that will run around the clock.

But June 9th is about more than one project.

City Council may vote on rules that could remove the public hearing process for future projects like this. That means fewer opportunities for neighbors to ask questions, raise concerns, and be heard before decisions are made.

Today, it is Oxmoor. Tomorrow, it could be your neighborhood.

Please read and share Allison’s op-ed. Then make plans to be in the room.

🐱 Kitten season is here, and our tiniest residents are eating us out of house and home!

Every day, orphaned kittens, nursing moms, and growing babies arrive at GBHS needing specialized care and plenty of food to help them thrive. Right now, we're especially in need of kitten wet food, but there are several other supplies that help us provide lifesaving care to vulnerable animals.

If you'd like to help, donations can be dropped off at our Adoption Center or purchased directly through our Amazon and Chewy wish lists.

Every can, every bag, and every donation helps provide comfort, nutrition, and a brighter future for homeless pets in our care.

What happens when the public loses its seat at the table?

On June 9th, the Birmingham City Council will consider a new data center ordinance that could determine whether residents have a meaningful voice before future AI factories are built near neighborhoods, schools, churches, hospitals, and community institutions.

The public was told Birmingham was studying best practices from communities across the country. But a key protection that would have required project-specific public review of future hyperscale AI factories was removed from the latest draft.

This isn't a debate about whether Birmingham should welcome technology.

It's a debate about transparency, accountability, and whether the people who live here should have a voice before projects of this scale move forward.

Other communities have adopted stronger protections while continuing to attract investment. The question is simple:
Why should Birmingham settle for less?

Watch the video. Read the ordinance. Ask questions.
Then show up.

Bring a neighbor. Fill the room.

Because once these rules are adopted, they become much harder to change. And once a community gives away its voice, it rarely gets it back without a fight.

A huge thank you to Iron City Comic Con for having GBHS this weekend!

We loved meeting so many animal lovers, and we're especially grateful to everyone who adopted, donated, stopped by to say hello, or shared our mission with others.

A special thank you to May Hong for taking the time to meet Chamberlain, also known as Saja Boy Chamberlain. It was a memorable moment for everyone involved!

If you'd like to continue supporting shelter pets, please consider making a donation. Every gift helps us provide care, comfort, and hope to the animals who need it most. 💙

📢 A decision that could shape Birmingham's future is coming before the City Council on June 9.📢

On June 9, the Birmingham City Council will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the city's data center ordinance.

As discussed in our recent video, this issue extends beyond any single project. The ordinance would help shape how large-scale data center developments are defined, reviewed, and approved in Birmingham moving forward.

At GBHS, we believe transparency, accountability, and public participation matter. We encourage residents to stay informed, review the proposed changes, and attend the public hearing if they are able.

GBHS Is Fighting for the Future of Our Healing Campus

A proposed 300-megawatt AI factory could be built just over 1,100 feet from the Greater Birmingham Humane Society’s future animal hospital and rehabilitation campus in Oxmoor Valley.

Now Birmingham is preparing to vote on an ordinance that could remove the public hearing process for hyperscale data centers entirely.

In this video, GBHS CEO Allison Black Cornelius explains:
• Why GBHS voted to take legal action
• What changed in the proposed ordinance
• Why public input matters
• What this could mean for Birmingham neighborhoods moving forward

This is bigger than GBHS.

It is about transparency, accountability, and whether residents have a voice before projects of this scale are approved.

Please watch. Please share. Please stay informed.
